Hi all,

I completed my build last week but R2 is not working. When I turn the switch on and press the bottom power on button, R2's red light comes on, he wobbles forward a little and makes noises. However none of the other buttons seem to do anything, no matter how long I hold them down, so I am unable to connect him to the app.

I've taken the panels off and all the connections appear to be seated properly on the MCU board. I've also checked the connector behind the switch board and it is also connected properly.

Without the switches working, I cannot connect to the app so cannot tell if anything else is working. Considering I can turn the power on via the switch board, it seems like that can't be the problem. Can anyone suggest what else I can do to trouble shoot the issue?

Thanks very much.

I've just checked the forum properly and can see a lot of people have the same issue as me. In preparation for the first question, I also purchased the same Samsung 30Q (Button Top) batteries that everyone else did. I also have no access to a multimeter, not am I an electrician, so could do with some specific steps on what I might need to do please.

It might also be useful to add that I can hear a very very faint clicking-type sound from the front arm motor and an extremely faint noise from the dome head motor, so clearly power is getting round. I also now notice that there is a green LED lighted on the board in the dome and blue LEDs at the bottom of his legs.

You will now need to double check the labels are correctly placed and that they are all fully seated without any bent pins in the boards.

Could you also check the output of the battery box by borrowing a voltage meter to check it, you should be getting around 12.3 volts at the contacts of the leed end.

Hi arpurchase,

It's taken a while, but I've checked all the connectors and the pins are all ok, as far as I can tell. I used an analogue voltmeter and the needle was somewhere around 11 or 12, so I think it's getting the power it needs.

What do I need to do next please?

Thanks,

Michael

Update - I had another go at reseating the wires and am happy to say R2 now seems to be working a lot better than he was before. When I turn the power on, his head spins all the way round one way quickly, he makes loads of noises and lights up.

However, the head doesn't come back to the front and the light sabre button doesn't do anything. R2 also keeps putting himself into patrol mode after sitting still for a while and keeps bumping into the wall.

I thought I'd try and connect him to the app, to see if I can control him that way, but I can't seem to do it. I've followed the instructions and even though the yellow light comes on, the direct connection doesn't work. I was able to locate R2 on my network as R2D2 239 router, but it seems to need a password, which I don't know.

So, I now have a few questions I hope you can answer-

1) Do I need to worry about the head not turning back to centre?
2) What should I do about the light sabre button?
3) Is it normal for R2 to just start moving without me pressing any buttons? Also, should be be crashing into the wall so much?
4) What is the password for the R2 Router?

Thanks very much,

Michael

Hi Michael

Good to hear there is progress on your R2.

1/ The start up procedure is very important its how R2 sets all his sensors and makes him ready to opperate. Double check the conections to the rear head limit switches.

2/ The lightsabre button is a micro switch so check that it is opperating correctly by listeng for a click when pressed and that its in its correct position so its not fowled by anything. Again check the conections if the switch is functioning correctly.

3/ Sounds like he is in auto patrol mode off the front button. He will in this mode stop and then go forward after a while. Again it sounds like bad connection to the sensors here.

4/ The Link below gives you links to the apps and at the bottom the download for the user guide. The user guide has all the information about setting up the wi-fi via the app and has the passwords needed-

Hi Andy,

I've done as you suggested and checked the head sensor connections, both at the sensor and the MCU and everything is seated correctly, with no bent pins. However, the head still whips round to one side and doesn't return to centre.

I also checked the switches and all click properly and nothing obstructs them. Strangely, the lightsaber button almost works now, it raises about an inch, slightly lifting the cover, but it goes no higher. It retracts properly, but just won't go up.

Finally, I still can't connect him to the app. In local mode, I think I connected to him using the password although at no point did he display a solid green light but rather a flashing green and yellow one. After entering the password nothing happened and the app still said not connected.

I then tried the direct mode again and got the yellow light and generated the QR code, which I think was accepted, as the blue light stopped flashing and turned purple. However, the app still said he wasn't connected and he kept opening and closing his arms.

I'm really at a loss for what to do now, I'm out of my league here. I've spent a grand on something that doesn't work - isn't there some sort of aftercare for the model, where an expert can look at it and make it work for me?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Andy,

I can do that, but will that fix the light sabre and app connection issues?

Thanks,

Michael
