I started working on my build around 10am this morning and I was determined to get on with lining the bulwarks along the upper gun deck. I started out sanding away at the unevenness of the inner hull planking using (manicure) emery boards that I swiped off of my daughter....(Shhhh...She hasn't found out yet) Satisfied that the area to be planked was smooth enough, I began measuring out and cutting to length pieces of 1x5mm strips gluing them in place...The main problem I had was minute bubbles of dried glue that were tucked away in awkward places which were almost invisible to the naked eye!! Using magnifying headband, I was able to scrape away at the niggly bits using the point of a craft knife. The following pictures show my progress...
Blink

Work is ongoing at this point, I will leave the glue to dry and give the bulwarks a cote of yellow ochre paint tomorrow morning, but in the meantime I shall have a crack at putting together the first of the bits that come with this build...I must admit, this version of H.M.S Victory is getting more and more interesting as we progress...certainly the most detailed model I have built thus far? Happy building shipmates...

I thought that I would continue with the upper gun deck bulwarks this morning...So I cut a numerous short strips of masking tape and placed each piece on the decking immediately below the area mentioned in issue 47 that was to be painted. I began to give the bulwarks the first of three coats of yellow ochre paint...the following pictures show my progress...
Blink

With the first coat applied, the model will have to wait until tomorrow before it gets a second coat...Now to get on with making those bitts that I was on about in my last post....Happy building friends...

Well, I decided to push my luck a bitt further when making the bitt by following the instructions in issue 47...So, no further ado...here is the bitt I was going on about!! If this pun is going a bitt too far...then I had better go and come back a bitt later???
LOL LOL LOL

No...Seriously, this was one of the most fiddly jobs so far..bar the cannon. I found it difficult to pencil in the measurements onto the 4mm x 4mm piece of wood supplied...but I found that if I stood three pieces of scrap 5mm x 1mm on top of each other and placed them by the side of the 5mm x 5mm piece of wood, it made it easier to keep the rule stable while marking out the fine measurements...and for drilling the holes in the 5mm x 5mm. I fond it easier to use a 0.3mm drill bit to bore the first holes then expand them up to 1mm before elongating the holes with the point of a craft knife...

Now, I shall paint the bitt black and put the bitt away somewhere safe until it is needed further on into the build...So sayonara for now shipmates...

Well, halfway through another week and I expect to pick up issue 69 from my newsagent some time today?? With the benefit of being well behind with your build is seeing where problems have arisen and how our fellow shipmates have got around them? I have just looked at Issue 49 and it is covering the fitting of the gratings, cannon balls and the rigging of the cannon and their installation in the next issue? Now, I have been giving this some thought.(noticing the smell of burning??)..and that concerns the idea of turning the model keel up in order to paint the hull. It is with fitting and rigging the cannon and other tasks...then the dreaded thoughts of pieces of cannon, ect coming adrift while the model is inverted??? So, I am considering giving the hull a final once over with sand paper then fitting the rudder and copper painting the hull before continuing with the installation of other parts...So, onward we go, and having put the gratings together, here is where I am up to at the present...
Blink

Now, none of the above parts have been fitted into place, I will concentrate on putting the rudder assembly together next and giving the hull it's final inspection before going ahead with the copper painting...So, until my next posting, happy building shipmates...

Jonny.

Nice looking grates you have there.

I to wish i had checked ahead more before fitting the grates and cannons before turning her over again. But hey, you live and learn.

Nice build and keep up the great work.
