Stage 7

This stage was also without incident. I built a jig for cutting deck planks to length of 70mm. Made the process much quicker.

I sealed the deck with 4 coats of Minwax polycrylic satin clear coat.

Well another stage down with no problems. This kit is a dream to build so far.

The bulkhead on frame 4 was sealed with clear coat now for convenience.

Well I spoke too soon. Shortly after starting Stage 9, I discovered the slight twist in the very forward false keel I found and thought I fixed in Stage 1, has reared it's ugly head.

While fitting the upper deck I noticed that frames 2 and three were slightly out of line, more so on the starboard side. I was able to trim the notches and get the deck to fit.

In Stage 10 I found more evidence that the keel is in fact got a slight starboard twist. It looks like the hole for the bowsprit will need modification. I need to figure out the easiest way to do that.

Any suggestions?

Hi Mark,
Doing well on your build.
The ribs are not a problem you could have just pulled them into the notches on the deck. They would not of changed anything on the shape of anything for you. You normally get the odd tip of ribs twist a little, the cutouts on the decks are usually correct.

As for the bow and false keel. It doesn't look too bad. I would need picture of head on and one one directly down over it. Here is the official build pic to show you.

Here are more detailed pics of the issues at the bow. Not overly concerned about any twist in the ribs as they can be faired. My question really is about making sure the hole for the bowsprit is true. would hate to get to that stage and find that the bowsprit wont fit.

You can see there is a little twist from the front where the notch is cut out. The best way would be to un-glue from the deck and re clamp it in line with the deck cutout at the front, then re glue. The formers each side of it should sit better then. As for the hole ,it is drilled out at a later stage to fit the mast there so not such a problem.

This Stage finishes the stern end of the false keel. The Bowsprit deck was also planked.
