So on to planking, I decided to start this work now as I know how I want the planking to run, very much how I planked the Victory, starting at midships up to the Bulwarks, then under the Hull.

This ship is double planked but I want the first planking to be as smooth as possible.

I am shamfering the planks to fit ,and I am using nails untill the planks are dry then I am removing them, the holes will not matter as the second plank will go on top.

The glue is Aliphatic my preferred adhesive.

First row of planks:-

The planks should be 5mmx2mm but the 2mm varies from plank to plank, but no matter, it is only the first planking I will sand it down before I apply the second cover of planks.

For people who are new to modelling, I thought I would show you the tools I am using (no need for anything complicated)

1) A Pencil

2) Nail Push

3) Razor Saw

4) Sander

5) Ronseal Wood Filler (Also used by Mr T in the offical Victory build)

6) Aliphatic Wood Glue

Here is a photo of the TEAM :-

So we now have 8 planks fitted, 3 rows are well and truly dry and you can see I have removed the nails, the other 5 rows I will leave to cure untill tommorrow.

I am very pleased with the balsa fillets, I can not recommend highly enough fitting these to all builds, I have taken some photos showing how the planks fit smoothly round the balsa.

Thats all for this time, If you have any questions or points to raise please feel free.BigGrin Wink ThumpUp

Thanks JonnyBlushing

The sander is made by 3M you can rotate the handle through 360degrees use the sharp end up front or whatever, I purchased it from Homebase it comes with 3 or 4 sanding pads (They last for ages) I think it was a fiver. I hope thats a helpWink BigGrin

can I make a comment here, the sander that mwg got I also got many months ago at homebase, now I don't know if I did something wrong, but it fell apart.it's only soft plastic, but the rubberised sanding base,is a great piece of kit.
it lasts and lasts and being flexible I use it on most of everything, and you can even wash it and get the blocked pieces out of it.I.E. glue, filler ect.I even bought spares, separate.
btw mwg mate, you do drill the planks first before nailing don't you? I use a cut dressmaking pin as a drill bit so as I don't split the wood.

Hi Karl, I have got two of these sanders and had them for years, and they have not fell apart, you couldn`t by any chance be heavy handed could you?Blink

I would only drill the plank if I was leaving the nail in (for uniformity) or fitting a tapered plank where the end is greatly reduced, otherwise I find drilling not necessary. When I nail without drilling I am very careful, and in all my years of modelling have very rarely split a plank, in the case of the Endeavour as you know its double planked,so the first planking is not so critical.but hey!each to their own, different strokes for different folks as they saySmile Wink

Hi again everyone,

In this part of the build diary I am continuing the Hull planking.

Before I had fixed 8 rows of planks to the port side this is what the ship looked like after this :-

The next task was to Plank the Starboard side so the planking is balanced and the Hull was less likely to twist,so here is the 8 planks I fitted :-
