Pack 2 - Stage 13

This stage sees the installation of frame 10 and the last length of the lower deck. A 5mm x 5mm beam was glued to the lower ledges of frame 10. The joints of the lower deck sections were reinforced with scraps of 5mm x 5mm strips from below.

Bulkheads B and C were covered with dark wood strips, sanded and sealed with satin polycrylic clear coat.

Until next time....

Pack 2 - Stage 14

I started by fitting and gluing the last section of the main deck. This section was planked with 70mm sections of planking following the same pattern and the rest of the deck.

Pack 2 - Stage 15

This stage starts by sanding, fitting and gluing frame 11 to the false keel. Deck beams were cut and fitted across the ledges of frames 8, 9 and 10. I then Glued bulkhead A to the front of frame 8. Finally, 2 doors were added to the each of the bulkheads attached to frames 4 and 8.

Pack 2 - Stage 16

The upper deck is planked, as before, with 70mm strips of planking. I sanded the planked deck and applied 3 coats of clear coat.

I built the grating from a future stage and glued it in place on the stern end of the mid deck before fitting and gluing the upper deck in place. I did this for ease of assembly as the opening is under the overhang and would be more difficult in the future steps.

Pack 2 - Stage 17

Thanks for all the kind comments to this point.

This stage begins with the small deck piece that was shipped with stage 16. It was planked as before. I have chosen to paint the clear coat on the deck prior to fitting it in place.

Beams were cut and glued to the front of frames 10 and 11. The deck was then fixed to those beams.

Bulkhead B was attached to the front of frame 10. At this point I also decided to go ahead and install bulkhead C to the front of frame 11 and the wood trim along the front edge of the quarter deck.

This completes this stage and Pack 2.

Thanks again for following my build. Follow me back to the completion of my A-10 Warthog as I anxiously await arrival of Pack 3.

Mark.

This is going to be a lengthy update as I was so into the build, I didn't take the time to post stage by stage. I'll do better next month. BigGrin Blink

Pack 3

I started this pack by cleaning the edges of frame 12 and fitting it to the stern edge of the false keel, making sure the glue dries with the frame 90% to the false keel.

Next I removed the transom and transom supports from the fret and cleaned them up. The supports (A,B and C) were glued in place on frame 12. Once the supports had dried, the Poop deck (planked at the end of Pack 3) was fitted to frames 11 and 12. The upper (above the top notches) was planked using leftover deck planks. The transom was then fitted to the transom supports and the stern edge of the poop deck.

A 5 x 7 piece of the previously built grate was framed in with 2 x 3 mm strip with an opening of the same size attached. The grate assembly was coated with clear coat and installed over the stern-most deck opening (after cutting the beam in the way).

The bowsprit bulkhead was retrieved from storage. 2 dummy gun mounts were glued to the inside surface covering the bottom 2 ports. The bulkhead was then fitted and glued in place on the bow of the ship.

Fairing of the upper hull (above the protrusions) was done next. The first gun port strip is fitted with the notch engaging with the protrusion on frame 2. Glue and nails were used to hold strips in place. The rear strip is fitted next engaging the notchs between strip A and B. A short piece of planking is cut and glued to the back of the joint between the 2 gun port strips.

A 2 x 5mm plank is cut to span from the front of frame 2 to the center of frame 5. This plank is glued and nailed to the frames above the first set of gun port strips. Another length of planking is cut and fitted to reach from center of frame 5 to center of frame 8. I continued the first row of planking to the center of frame 10 and then a short plank from frame 10 to p[ast the transom.

The next row of planking spans between the front of frame 2 to the center of frame 4, then to the center of frame 7. The next section reaches between frame 7 and 11 and finished with a short plank from frame 11 to aft of the transom.

.The next set of gun port strips is fitted above the double row of planking. The forward strip starts at the front of the bowsprit bulkhead. The notch in the bottom of the strip engages the protrusion on frame 2. The middle sections were fitted next, then the last section was placed at the stern. Next I fitted another row of planking above the gun ports.

A 13 x 13 square grating was built and installed on the large opening in the middle deck.

This completes my build thru Pack 3.

Thanks for following...
Mark
