Step 22

I made another 6 eye bolt/ring combinations and painted them black.

Then I marked the deck according the the measurements from the instructions and drilled 6 1mm holes in the marked locations. The eye bolts were then glued in the holes.

Short step here.

Steps 23, 24, 25 and 26

In this step, I did a final fitting of the upper deck pieces (parts 52 and 53)

The frame positions were marked out on the underside of parts 52. The area that will become the ceiling of the lower deck area was painted with Vallerjo Fire red.

I chose to begin the planking of the dec pieces before installing them thinking it would be easier. This in fact caused some minor issues with finishing the planking.

The 4 deck pieces were then glued in place, weighted down and allowed to dry completely.

Next I finished planking around the perimeter of the deck.

The parts of the frames that protruded above the deck were trimmed level with the deck surface. The entire deck was then sanded smooth.

The end joints of the planking was simulated with pencil lines creating 'planks' that are 76mm in length. Nails were marked with 4 pencil dots at each joint.

Several coats of minwax satin polycrylic sealer was applied to finish off the deck.

Step 27

Using 2 x 5mm planks, I built up the bulwarks by curving the plank to match the curve of the hull and glued another row of planking to the top course. This is just from the aft portion of the mid deck to the first rib at the bow. Using the measurements from the instructions, the top of the rail is marked out and trimmed to height. This step is repeated on the other side of the ship.

Step 28

In this stage, I laid out the upper deck gun ports according to the measurements in the instructions. Using a micro saw and craft knife, the ports were cut out. I used a flat needle file to smooth and square the ports. Repeat on the other side.

Step 29

I began this step by sanding the inside of the bulwarks smooth. Then using the 0.5 x 4mm deck planks, the bulwarks were lined. After the glue had dried, I trimmed the planks even with the top edge of the bulwarks and around the gun ports.

Step 30

The outside of the new bulwark planks were sanded down even with the rest of the hull. Some filler was needed to smooth the gaps.

I then took a 2 x 2mm strip of wood and using the electric plank bender, I shaped 2 pieced to reach from the front of the bulwarks to the hole for the bow sprit.

Step 31

The padeyes on each side of the stern of the ship were drilled next. I carefully laid out the location of the 8 holes on each side of the stern. Then using a 1mm drill bit and a block of scrap wood the 8 holes were carefullu drilled out.

Step 32

A final sand was given to the inside and outside of the bulwarks. The blue paint (Vallerjo French Blue) was touched up and extended to the top of the hull.

The inside of the bulwarks and stern transom was painted with Vallerjo Fire Red after carefully masking the deck.

This completes the instruction file #7.
