Hi All, I have just thought of something,i take it we are coiling the wheel? if so would it not be easier to do it before the Poop Deck planking is fitted,it will be quite difficult to do it after. I hav'nt seen or heard "THE HOLY ONE" mention this, what do you all think?. Glen. Roger the Cabin Boy

That sounds like a good idea Glen...If there is no reason why it wasn't suggested or done before, it is well worth doing mate... Current Builds: Deagostini HMS Victory: Deagostini HMS Sovereign of the seas. Completed Builds: Del Prado: HMAS Bounty: Hachette: RMS Titanic: Del Prado: Cutty Sark...

I coiled the wheel before fitting to the deck. and drilled holes for the rope to go into, also soaked rope in thinned wood glue to stiffen and fix it. I was just thinking about something similar to this with the 'Rat lines', surely it would be better to fit these before fixing the upper mast as it would be easier to create a loop and fit it over the mast square section (and arrange them in the right order), you've got to be thinking well ahead in this game, which once again brings us back to PLANS!!(should'nt have went there that issue is dead and buried) . Being new to this lark I've looked in a few books for guidance and every build I've come accross has them fitted before the upper mast. Jeff

Hi All, Just looked at some photo's of Victory's wheel and the the rope thats coiled around the drum dos'nt go straight into the deck, there seems to be some sort of timber battens running either side of the wheel and the rope go's into this first. any thoughts on this?. Glen Roger the Cabin Boy

Yes, Glen you are correct. If you have Jase "Quarter Deck Detail Pack" you can see the arrangement. If the rope goes though a fixed hole it will wear the rope down. The arrangement is a slot in the deck and the boxing around the slot with a sliding section with the hole in it which slides and follows the rope when it wound onto the hub or unwound from the hub. This sliding plank is keyed into the surrounding box. This arrangement helps to stop water and other objects from falling through the slot.
