Ammo Mig WWII LUFTWAFFE LATE FIGHTERS SOLUTION BOX 02

A little while ago Mig issued the first of their so-called solution boxes. That first version covered off “WWII USA ETO” vehicles (so ideal for the likes of the Sherman for instance)

The second release in this “Solutions Box” series this time covers off “WWII Luftwaffe Late War Fighters”

The intention with these so-called Solution Boxes is to provide you all of the materials to Paint and Weather your chosen model without having to look for additional products (well that is the theory but this Pack 2 does fall a little short on that in my view – more on that later)

Let’s take a look at the set and what we get with this one.

PICTURES 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5

A nice firm cardboard storage box holds all of the materials and the supplied guide book.

Upon removing the guide book and foam panel all of the supplied parts are held in their own cut-outs in the lower foam tray.

If you look at PICTURE 5 there are 2 quite large areas you can see here which do not hold any materials and I will reference that later on.

PICTURES 6, 7, 8 & 9

The book suggests a range of 6 aircraft that you could use with this solutions box but the materials are not just limited to this selection or genre.

There is nothing stopping you using these materials on anything you want – just needs your imagination and the supplied book provides plenty of “food for thought ideas”.

The book takes you through the various stages of priming, painting, decaling, weather and a range of additional effects.

"LET DOWN"

When you start to read the book, it references out the following items that are used as part of the lessons but ARE NOT INCLUDED in the kit:

A.MIG-2000 Acrylic Thinner
A.MIG-2018 Enamel Odourless Thinner 35ml
A.MIG-0191 Steel Paint
A.MIG-2029 Ultra Decal Set
A.MIG-2030 Ultra Decal Fix

Now my frustration here is that with space in the box (PICTURE 5) why did they elect to leave out the Enamel Thinner and to an extent the Acrylic thinner.

Both products are referenced in the lessons with the Enamel thinner being required in the streaking, Staining and Mud Splash techniques.

Yes, you probably would have a suitable enamel thinner on hand but remember this is supposed to be a solution box and here we have a product that has been left out of the set even though it required in 3 of the lessons.

Oddly enough the thinners are included in the Solution Box 01.
I would also have expected a small bottle of brand acrylic thinner.

I have read so many articles were people have used an acrylic thinner from one company on a different company paint only to then encounter problems.

A minor gripe but frustrating when the box has space for both items but Mig have decided not to include them.

So, in terms of what we get in the box the first items are 3 “Oil Brushers”. Never used these before so interested to see how they perform. With names such as “Star ship Filth” I think that shows these items are not just limited to WW2 aircraft.

We also get a good-sized bottle of “One Shot Primer”. Again, never used this but have heard some good reports about it. We also get a gloss and a matt varnish.

7 Acrylic paints are supplied in colours suitable for the late war aircraft. Rather like these new paint bottles as the Yellow tops indicate a mixing ball has been added to the pot and this certainly helps in mixing these paints which I notice do separate out very quickly in the bottle.

One looked like White Paint until I shook it and it turned Blue.

A filter, streaking effect (again referring to “Star ships” and a pigment powder.

3 Panel Line Washes in colours appropriate to the era of the aircraft this set is designed for.

And to top off the set we are provided with 2 brushes from the Mig range as well as a “free Gift” which turns out to be 2 micro brushes.

So that concludes what we receive in this set. Overall a really good idea for someone that has not already collected some of these products and in theory you have everything to produce a decent looking aircraft if you follow along with the various exercises in the supplied book.

The only minor “frustration” for me is the fact that 2 products I would consider essential have been omitted from this set, namely the enamel thinners and the acrylic thinner.
