YH947V 60W Adjustable Soldering IronWhile its not one of the “Primary Tools” in a kit modellers tool kit a soldering iron does have its uses.
I dabble with a bit of electronic work and have also been thinking of trying soldering of some of the large etched parts I use as gluing has not also given an ideal join.
A few years ago, I had a gas-powered soldering iron but that was quite a “large, Clumsy” piece of kit and I never really got on with it very well.
Recently a small Antex mains powered iron I had used for years finally packed up so I started looking for a replacement.
What I was looking for as an ideal solution was something that had an adjustable temperature range, was small enough for my “dainty little mitts”, and if possible, all packed away in a nice storage box as I like to keep everything in place and have a place for everything.
Having looked through Amazon, eBay and a couple of other sites I saw a lot of “soldering rework stations” but to me they are just a little bit too big for what I wanted. These being more suited to their own worktop position.
I ended up in the end tracking down a “YH947V 60W Adjustable Temperature Iron with LED Working Lights”.
PICTURE 1 & 2Ideal for what I wanted as the set comes all nicely packed in its own case.
Everything included is all nicely fitted in the case.
PICTURE 3We get a soldering tip cleaner
PICTURE 4Along with the soldering bit already fitted to the iron we get a selection of 5 additional tips each with a different point.
PICTURE 5We get a de-soldering pump. Never found these of much use to be honest and have used de-soldering tape in the past where I have had to remove a soldered joint
PICTURES 6 & 7We get a decent stand for the iron. The base will hold either the solder tip cleaner tin or the sponge that is included.
We also get a decent quantity of solder supplied.
PICTURE 8A pair of tweezers
PICTURES 9 THROUGH 13The temperature on this iron can be adjusted between 200 and 450 C. There is a 3-way switch on the unit – off – on – on with lights
At the head of the soldering iron are 3 bright white LED’s that can be switched on or left off when the iron is being used. Nice touch though as this lights exactly the area you are working on.
PICTURES 14 & 15And the final part of the kit (not in the case) as it arrives is an ESD silicone heat resistant work mat. Its matched to the set as it has a shape that fits the soldering iron stand exactly.
