I agree the S4 is a very nice aircraft but there are earlyer aircraft that were single wing without bracing wires like the newly released Junkers D.1 from WNW and the Brandenburg W29 although the Brandenburg had some minimal bracing wires to the floats but non to the wings. I have both the W12 and the W29 kits its one of my all time favorite floatplane aircraft, ugly but strangly atractive with a lethal look not captured until WW2 and the introduction of FW'S butcher bird. Andy
Hi Andy, I agree, you are right, there were indeed earlier aircraft without bracing wires. What I had meant to say but neglected to write in my post was that the S.4 was a radical design amongst 'high speed' racing seaplanes and in particular in the history of Scheider Trophy seaplanes up until that point? To have an unbraced wing and floats in such a high speed aircraft, with all of the additional forces and loads that come from operating on water, was completely unheard of back in 1924? The aircraft that you highlight also operated from water as you correctly note but they weren't travelling at such high speeds as the Schneider Trophy racers when airborne? My mistake as I say, I should have been clearer in what I meant when I had posted?
As an interesting side note - The pilot of the S.4, Henry Biard, commented upon first seeing it that it was a beautiful aircraft but that he was somewhat concerned that it didn't appear to have any bracing wires and that he had reservations about the inherent rigidity of RJ Mitchell's new design. He later commented after test flying it, that it just didn't feel right and that there appeared to be significant wing 'flutter'? It later crashed in practice for the 1925 Schneider Trophy race and there is a lot of consensus that wing flutter was a major contributor to that crash. Henry Biard survived fortunately but the S.4 never actually got to race in the Schneider Trophy.
All cool, great to discuss things and I take your point. I too like the look of those Brandenburgs and I also agree with your views on the 'Butcher Bird', what an awesome aircraft that was!

Thanks Alan, any comments from you are always greatly appreciated.
I always say that in modelling there are never any 'problems', just challenges for which we have to find solutions? It's that which makes modelling such fun and very satisfying when solutions are found. I love it!

Hello all,
A little more work done, with all of the cockpit parts now painted and assembled. Next update will see the two fuselage halves permanently joined together after which work will move on to fuselage exterior details and then the fitting of the main wings and tail structure will take place.

Hi Kev! Absolutely brilliant work on that cockpit, looks so realistic I wouldn't be surprised if the dials went around! I can remember the Schneider trophy sequences from the film "First of the Few" seeing how fast and how low they were flying I'd have to be pretty desperate to risk even glancing down at those dials on the floor!
