I was just thinking about something similar to the post about 'coiling' the rope on the ships wheel in 'General discussions', that is fitting the 'Rat lines', surely it would be better to fit these before fixing the upper mast as it would be easier to create a loop and fit it over the mast square section (and arrange them in the right order), you've got to be thinking well ahead in this game, which once again brings us back to PLANS!!(should'nt have went there that issue is dead and buried)Blushing .
Being new to this lark I've looked in a few books for guidance and every build I've come accross has them fitted before the upper mast.
I could be wrong, but thought it must be easier that way! Any views?
you can see what I mean with this picture!

you are indeed right, the mast instructions say "DO NOT GLUE MASTS".just to clear up another point, they are called the shrouds, which in turn is part of the STANDING RIGGING,which is the first rigging to assemble.and the ratlines are the cross pieces to form the rope ladders.long way to go before we reach that part.
Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory
Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat.

Cheer's Karl,
Was'nt sure which bit the 'Rat lines' were, just fired off the mail while it was on my mind, without checking!Blushing in case some of the folk here (including myself) stuck it all together.

P.s your 'Amerigo Verspuci' is coming on a treat, hull looking tip top.

Sorry to contradict Karl, I hav'nt recieved the particular issue yet with the upper main mast, but Tomick clearly states to glue the second stage into position! Quote;
"Cut a piece of brass wire 10 to 11mm long and file the ends square. Then slide the topmast through the mast cap, insert the brass wire into the lower hole in the topmast base, then push the mast down until the brass wire sits on the cross trees.
When you are happy with the fit glue the mast in place ensuring the two sections of mast are in alignment and that the square top section is parallel to the square on the lower mast."

It does say not to glue the mast into the ship!
And as mentioned earlier this would make fitting the 'Shrouds'(thanks Karl) much more difficult.
I think I'll be holding off on the glue!

thanks jeff for the comments, yes I'll be holding off that as well, while it is still possible to fix the shrouds with the mast made up,it is indeed easier to do it with just the main mast.
as for the vespucci,,have you seen the decking yet?

Very fine work there Karl, in more ways than one, decking planks don't look very wide so it must take a long time to complete!

That's because it is what the build instructions state; whilst you are of course free to build as you choose Wink

Thanks for your input Tomick, I wasn't insinuating that we should'nt glue the mast together, just thought it might be easier when fitting the shrouds, being new to this game I need all the help I can get to make life easier.
you are unfortunately unable to veer from the official build even if you want to offer alternatives so it's up to all of us on the forum to make suggestions that some may find usefull! even small things like drilling holes for fitting the 'eye bolts' at an angle to secure them better are different from the official build, but could prevent them coming adrift later on, obvious to some but not others!
To me your build guide is indespensible in ensuring that I am doing things correctly, and is the first thing I log into.
Keep up the good work,Cool
