So the same group of modelers that did the Star Wars sketchbook challenge for Wonderfest this year diced on a challenge for Wonderfest 2020. This years challenge was to scratchbuild a model from a cartoon from your childhood. So after a bit of a think about the cartoons I watched as a kid I decided that I would choose a car from the Wacky Races cartoons. this was a very popular cartoon in my childhood.there were actually only 17 episodes ever made.I am sure most of you remember Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly.There were 11 different race cars in the show. I decided that the convert a car driven by professor Pat Pending would be the car I would build. I am planning on putting a motor in the engine so the prop spins and maybe some lighting in the cockpit area and possibly a motor inside to make the whole car shake so ti looks like the cartoon. I will be using Rhino again and printing with the Form2 printer ans I will post a build diary here. Wonderfest is in May 2020 so hopefully as long as I dont procrastinate too much this year I will be able to document the build and painting as well as the design (unlike the Star Wars scooter).   I can go for this Carl, although like Alan I still have the hots for Penolope myself but Dick Dastardly's car was always the coolest breakdown car ever Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

I agree Dicks car was the best but under the rules of our challenge we could not model anything that had been released as a kit and there are a couple of kits of Dicks car. Carl And who DIDNT fancy Penelope pitstop

Look forward to this Carl, should be a good challenge. I too use to watch WW, I think everybody was in love with Penelope Pitstop. Also watched the spin off in the planes, "Stop the pidgeon" Oh god, got that in my head now. Mark Regards

Carl Nice choice from all of the vehicles in that show. I used to like the "Ant Hill Mob". Little gangster types with hats pulled down over their eyes and all running around in a little group. Tony Happy Modelling

OK so here we go. The first step is to get some basic shapes into Rhino. Rhino has a feature where you can input a picture and then make the picture translucent so you can trace the outline.Although this only creates a 2d model it is very useful because it gives you curves you can extrude and rotate to create 3d surfaces.It also allows you get the comparative size of the different parts.Once the sketch is done I can resize it to the size I want the actual model to be and it will automatically scale all the curves. The next step is to split the sketch up into sections and use the curves to make 3d surfaces. Curves is the term used for line segments-either straight or curved in Rhino. This is a really good fun project.
I bet if you printed of duplicate parts or even moulded them, there would be a good few buyers for a kit.
I'll be really keen to see how this turns out.

So now I have the outline in Rhino I resized it to make the hull about 8 inches long. The next step was to turn the 2d lines into 3d objects.I figured I would start with the hull since everything ties into that. Constructing a complex shape like a ships hull in 3d modelling is actually quite similar to building a model ship hull.You use cross sections to define the width of the hull and then use a keel section and place the cross sections at specific points and then join all the curves together (kind of like planking a hull) to create the surface of the hull. However, this was a cartoon vehicle and I realized that using a regular boat hull shape just wouldnt work.It would be way too narrow to fit all of the details.So I decided to use the outline of the hull and then made a top bulwark to define the width of the hull and had rhino fill in the details by using a function called curve network.This takes a bunch of curves and makes a 3d shape out of them.I only did one half of the hull and then copied and mirrored it to make the full surface.It saves a lot of time to model just half of the object and then mirror it and it also ensures that the object is symmetrical. Once the basic hull shape was created I converted it from a surface to a solid, added the top bulwark and made a gunwale plank to make the hull like a regular wooden lapstrake hull.I then superimposed the 3d hull on the 2d drawing to check for accuracy.Now I have a solid object that I can use to build the inner details on. In order to print this part I will need to cut it in half because 8 inches is too big for my printer.I will do this once the rest of the parts are designed. The next step is to start adding the details inside the hull.These will all be separate models since I will need to split the model up to print it anyway. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

OK nest step is the make the cabin.The shape of the cabin was made based on the top of the hull and the 2d drawing.Once I had the shape as a surface I made it a solid. The 3 windows on each side were cut out and then the window frames were made.These are separate parts to make painting easier.I am thinking of putting a mini lab in the cabin.Maybe a table with some test tubes and vials of liquid on it. I will use clear plastic to make the windows and probably use a decal to replicate the curtain and pull. The next step is to make the wall at the front of the cabin. Carl Very neat designing the model. Have you test printed any of the parts yet? See in your earlier post you mentioned the hull tub would have to be in sections because of the size. Tony Happy Modelling
