Stage 103 Contents: Mast Top and parts fret, Gallery Roof and Decorations.

Cut a length of 0.5 x 4mm wooden strip (Stage 84) to fit over the central door at the aft end of the quarterdeck. Glue to one side of the centre line, using the decking planks as a guide. Cut a second length of strip and glue it next to the first, on the other side of the centre line. Continue fitting lengths of strip to completely cover the top of the door. When dry, cut the ends of the strips so they are flush with the front and back of the doorway. Cut another length of wooden strip to fit over the back of the doorway and glue it into place. When dry, cut the excess of the strip away and sand the doorway roof smooth. Now repeat the process on the two doorways at the front of the quarterdeck.

Retrieve the two roofs C63 from stages 37 and 39, glue them over the walls of the doorway at the aft end of the main deck.

Note: As I’m using wood stain, I chose now to stain the forward sections of the bow decks with two coats of natural oak. This helped to prevent the possibility of any stain bleeding onto the deck when staining the forward bulkhead. Once dry, the forward bulkhead was then stained using the same stain as on the main hull.

Take the two door frames 125 and 140 (Stage 69), glue them to the front of the bulkhead 15mm from either side of the centre line.

Remove the parts from the mast top fret and sand the edges smooth. Note: The staining/painting of the fighting top was completed as outlined in build stage 95 so won’t be repeated here. Test-fit and glue one of the crosstrees into the first notches of the two trestletrees, checking they are perpendicular. Test-fit and glue the other two crosstrees into the other notches of the trestletrees. Before the glue dries, check that they are all at right angles.

Test-fit and glue the 12 ribs into the notches in the mast top platform. Now glue the rail onto the tops of the ribs. Turn the platform over and glue the crosstrees onto the underside, ensuring it is centred and has the correct orientation as shown in step 16 of the instructions.

Retrieve decorations C142, C142a, C142b and C142c from stage 102, Remove any burrs or flash and apply a coat of metal primer, leave to dry.

Follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint the decorations. When dry, carefully store the decorations in a bag labelled with this stage number.

Store the mast top assembly and any unused parts in a bag labeled with this stage number.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 104 Contents: Gallery Roof and Decorations.

Retrieve decorations C143, C143a, C143b and C143c from stage 103, Remove any burrs or flash and apply a coat of metal primer, leave to dry. Follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint the decorations. When dry, carefully store the decorations in a bag labelled with this stage number.

Apply some modelling putty/filler to the joins between the bow door frames and the bow wall. I used a dark colour wood filler for this task. Leave the filler to dry then smooth the joins with sandpaper.

Now apply filler around the two doorways at the rear of the main deck. Leave to dry then sand the area smooth. Now mask off and paint the areas around the bulkheads red (RAL 3020).

Note: I chose to hold off from painting any of the door frames at this stage, they will be painted when the decks have been finished and sealed.

Store any unused parts in a bag labelled with this stage number.

This stage is now complete.

That looks fantastic and your painting is just so neat.

I bet there is a fair weight to this one with all those castings you have to add.

Its a great looking model for sure.
