This is a build I will be doing in between others I have going on, and there is a bit of a story behind this as well. A few years back my business partner and myself were going through a bit of a midlife crises.  We both fancied a sports car; I had my eye on an old classic car.  After several weeks looking I came across this little beasty and fell in love, so did my business partner.  You’ve guessed it we bought it. It was kept in his garage and shared it whenever we wanted to take the wives out, separately of course. After a year or so he was having an extension built to his house and needed some money. Not wanting to give the car up, I bought his half, and so the car was mine. I kept the car for several more years getting plenty of enjoyment out of it, showing in classic car shows etc. But sadly, I needed to sell it too as the money was better used elsewhere. I know I totally regret the decision; especially how much they go for now. Anyway, each Christmas we do a secret Santa, well there is just the two of us….. but that doesn’t matter. So, I thought I would build a replica of the car, complete with luggage rack. The Airfix model is a simple one, so some modding will be needed and I may put in some lighting as well. So that is the plan. The first few pictures are of the car itself and then the kit. I will be starting this very soon, after my holiday. Mark  Markwarren attached the following image(s):

Wow.
Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.
As you are well aware, you've chosen an ancient Airfix kit as a starter, which is a bit of a challenge.
I wish you well with this as it's one I've been tempted by (along with the old Triumph Herald kit) on a good few occasions.

Mark Looking like a very interesting little project you have yourself there. I know at one time The Works bookshop had a range of these airfix kitson offer but looks like they have discontinued that. From what i can see it looks like you get a lot of parts in the box. .hope it all starts out well and enjoy your holiday by the way. Tony Happy Modelling

oooh cool. I have read that kit is a real bear to build, but after seeing what you did with the podracer I am sure it will be a stunner.

Started this build. I thought the pod racer kit was bad, but this kit takes the biscuit. A lot of filing and parts not fitting well. Anyway, the engine is very basic, so I have scratch built some parts to the main engine block including widening it and adding some more detail. There will be some more pipe work and cabling fitted once the engine is in place. I have put it next to a 5 pence coin just to show the true size. Mark Modelling at its best. Taking a kit like this and bringing it up to such a high standard. Its really great to see someone tackle an older kit and one that does not cost, in money terms, a fortune. Its sure great inspiration for others to see what can be achieved on a budget with a little time and imagination. Your engine looks fab. I did get a bit carried away, the supplied engine looked nothing like the one in the photo. I bought two of these kits, if this turns out well, I might make the other one for myself. Thanks Mark

Back from my holidays yesterday and back to work on Monday. So, this morning I thought I would get some modelling done today, withdrawal symptoms, anyway the weather is not too good so the garden will have to wait. Just before I went away, I had started the base of the car attaching the gearbox and wheel suspension. Nothing fitted well at all,  I do seem to choose these kits. The first couple of pictures are these parts fitted and primed. This morning I thought I would make the luggage rack as shown in the next picture of the real thing. I used 0.8mm styrene tubing warmed up in hot water to make it pliable and easier to bend. I drew a template on some paper before starting but most was trial and error. I have also filed off the boot hinges for the rack to sit properly. The last pictures show it test fitted on the car, with blu tack, but once glued in place should take out the slight warp it has at the moment. The very last picture shows the size against a 5 pence piece. Thanks for looking More soon. Markwarren attached the following image(s):
