Sadly it really does look as if EM haven't sorted this one at all.
It also looks as if they have extended the issue run with no extra parts - otherwise, why not advertise the new additions?

I hope you get a good result though and it will be great to see a build diary.

Roy.

Not much on the harley to do but going to sit with that as i am not sure if i am prepared for any more major disappointment today.

Past my bedtime but had a sneaky peek without opening the individual packs and first glance looks ok.

Tomorrow is the test as today spent building my harley parts (and now applying for the next round of the Krypton Factor trying to sort the screws out :-) and enjoyed that. Crikey what a large beasty that is going to be when complete.

I will update on my the harley, the DB5 parts, and if anyone is intetested would you believe 1:200 scale studded anchor chain, if it works then my bismarck could launch very soon :-)

JAMES BOND ASTON MARTIN DB5 – 04th AUGUST 2019

REPLACEMENT PACKS 1 & 2

For those that have followed this attempt at a build diary you will already be aware that my original packs 1 & 2 had numerous issues with the paint finish on the body parts in particular.

Eaglemoss did agree to replace both packs free of charge and these duly arrived yesterday

It was with great trepidation that I opened these (having had a cursory glance yesterday I left the actual examination of the parts until this morning.

While these replacements are certainly a lot better than the first set, I received there are still a few issues which I will document here.

One thing that really struck me this time when opening the parts is the VERY STRONG smell of paint.

BULLET PROOF SHIELD

PICTURES 1 – 4

The rear facing part of the (i.e. what a car following would see) is on the whole 100% better than before.

There is still a ridge of varnish bit this time along the top section that would be exposed when this shield is pressed down.

The rear of the shield still suffers an inconsistent varnish finish and again there are some “inclusions” in the varnish itself.

LIFT OUT ROOF PANEL

PICTURES 5 & 6

While the top section is acceptable. There are just 2 minor dust marks that could easily be polished out.

The underside again is not as bad as in the first pack but as arrowed there is a scratch in the finish and again it suffers someone from varnish runoff were the part has been “propped up” to dry and the varnish has pooled into one corner.

BONNET

PICTURES 7 – 12

The top surface f the bonnet only has one noticeable dust mark as arrowed in picture 9.

However, what it does suffer from again is varnish pooling along one edge (pictures 7 & 8).

I mentioned at the outset the strong smell of paint and this varnish pooling is still soft and you can indent it with a finger nail without having to exert any pressure to do so.

Very noticeable this time (picture 11) is an extremely rough edge as arrowed in this picture. This runs for ¾ the length of this side but were the arrow is shown there is the remains of what looks like the casting tab.

Depending of the bonnet to chassis fit this could stop the bonnet fully seating unless corrective action is taken.

Again, the underside of the bonnet is far from ideal. In no way as bad as the previous part but still some very evident rough finish.

To me it looks like they have painted the part THEN run the sander over it to remove some of the rough spots. This is mostly around what looks like the spot the bonnet hinge will be fitted so at the end of the day this may not be visible once that bracket is in place.

ENGINE BLOCK HALF

PICTURE 13.

No issue at all with this part.

SUMMING UP:

So overall, I am still not 100% happy based on what this kit is going to cost to put together.

What are my options?

Well first I could cancel but would then have to accept this kit escaped me on its first release and will do so again.

Secondly, I could press on and accept that its going to be down to me to bring parts up to an acceptable standard.

Frustrated by this because to me it sends a message to EAGLEMOSS that says “sell rubbish and we will still buy it” so how will that company then have an interest in improving.

In terms of re-painting that is certainly an option as the Silver Birch paint is available in the Zero Paints brand against code 1180 (presently £7.49 for a 60ml bottle)

AT this point the main downside to re-finishing is the fact the bonnet has couple of “Superleggra” logo in place and I cannot see any way of recovering these for use later on.

So, unless these get produced by the likes of Mike Lane (supplies mods to the DeLorean) then that would be a bit of an obstacle.

So, I now have to put some serious thought into what option I take. I am steering towards pressing on and making good but at the same time its that “how far do I go if this becomes really bad and how much investment am, I prepared to write off”.

Hope this little update is of interest to those building or contemplating building this offering from Eaglemoss.

Sorry to hear it isn't as good as was hoped.
Also bear in mind the engine is actually very wrong in all kinds of areas.
Most notably the cam covers which are nothing like the real thing.

It can all be altered though as I did with my build some years ago, and the one I recently rebuilt/trimmed/carpeted and detailed for someone.

Fingers crossed for you.

Roy.

Hello Carl.

Here's a link to my post regarding the DB5 I detailed for someone else.
It arrived to me as a complete car so I had to dismantle it and then rebuild it again...

Hi John, really hope you are able to sort out all of the problems you're finding. Such a shame as it really does look a stunning model but judging by the faults you're finding it certainly isn't a kit I would contemplate buying into. Wishing you good luck with the build....Cool Cool

I would just collect the whole lot, strip all the parts prep them to how I want them to look and respray to a better finish. You have already said why should I and I agree with this sentiment but the basic kit has the basis to be a very good replica if your willing to go that extra mile and do all the work needed.

You have already mentioned the paint and a better 2 pack clearcote is available although some airbrush skills would be needed, just ask if you need any advice. If you feel your airbrush skills are not up to the standard needed I would be willing to do the respray for you if you wish.

As for decals I would look for aftermarket replacements or even ask Roy if he has a way around this small problem.

This kit from the start had problems but with skill and careful thought it can be turned into an outstanding model.
Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

I'm on the fence with this one.
Having built two of them, it really is just a giant 'Burago' toy.

Severely lacking in detail and incredibly wrong in umpteen places.
HOWEVER - if you are prepared to go the extra mile, It can look very nice.
Just BIN the awful plastic wheels and search out some good ones.

Andy/Roy

Many thanks for your input and many thanks Andy for your offer to repaint.

I have sat here wondering what to do and think i will continue with it in the hope i can get it to a standard that looks acceptable.

There seems to be numerous problems being reported on a facebook build group with delays on parts seeming to be a common issue.

My skills are certainly not up to the experienced car builders like your good self there Roy so in terms of what should go were and all that i think i will have to gather ideas from other builders.

It is a lovely looking car and cannot see any other way of getting one of these unless i go with this offering.

Thanks again

Tony

That's great Tony.
All the best.

If you post a build diary I'll definitely watch and if I can offer suggestions as you go along which will help improve the model, I certainly will.

One really simple upgrade you could try would be to get a can of spray-effect leather in dark grey, and repaint all the interior trim.
The Bond DB5 didn't have black seats etc...

Roy.
