PACK 5

STAGE 32

The parts included in this pack are for mounting the driver’s seat onto the floor panel.

Assembly is very easy but if you are carpeting the floor it looks better if the main floor mount – part 32-2- is painted to match.

STAGE 33

This stage begins the build of the car engine.
The pack contains the parts to build the transmission case.
Once again, following the instructions is very simple but here you can begin adding extra details if you wish.

The starter motor actually comes apart so that you can paint certain aspects of it before putting it back together.
Also, you can drill out the ends of the starter motor solenoid to add the high tension and low tension wires. This kind of thin wire can easily be found in old telephone extension cables, computer printer cables etc.
The wires can be glues in using Cyano adhesive.

STAGE 34

These parts will build into the crank case.

Once assembled, the noticeable screw holes can be covered over using metal foil tape or self-adhesive vinyl and then painted over.

The holes in the side of the assembly underneath where the cylinder barrels will go do not need to be covered as they cannot be seen later on in the build.

STAGE 35

The cylinder barrels are included in this set of parts.
However, the supplied parts are silver in colour whereas in reality they are matt black.
This is easily changed before assembling the parts.

STAGE 36

These parts are for assembling the cylinder push rods and the inner end of the cylinder heads.

It will be a small improvement if you carefully remove the seam lines on the eight tubes and repaint them before assembly.

At this stage I also decided to repaint the engine mounting plate to match the body of the car – VW Mars red. Custom cars in particular would not have a dusty, surface rusted area here.

STAGE 37

The rocker covers and underside protection plate are included in this set of parts.

Being a ‘custom-car’, the rocker covers can be painted to add further colour to the engine.
They should be sprayed and allowed to dry before fitting them.

I chose to spray them chrome silver, and then transparent red over the top.

The protection plate that goes underneath the engine is actually a very good colour match for the genuine part.
All of these parts can be assembled easily.

STAGE 38

The drive shafts are included in this set of parts and now you can also install the engine to the main chassis.

The drive shafts can be improved by carefully removing the seam lines and by adding some hose clips using adhesive metal foil tape.

STAGE 39

This set of parts contains the cooling fan and shroud.

Looking at numerous images of custom cars, these parts are very frequently painted in a different colour to the standard black.

I chose to paint the fan side of the unit in red and yellow to match the car, before assembling the parts.
Also, the screw holes for fixing this part to the main shroud were filled before painting and the parts were glued together, leaving an assembly with no large black fixing screws.
The front of the shroud was sprayed metallic gunmetal grey.

STAGE 40

The carburettor and induction pipes.

All of the white components in this pack should have the mould seams removed, and the parts repainting matt white. As the parts are white, the mould seams tend to show up very clearly so this ought to be modified before assembling the parts.

The instructions show that the induction pipes are fitted before the fan shroud.
In fact, you will find it far easier to fit the shroud before the induction pipes.

A ‘VIN’ plate decal was also added to the fan shroud panel at this stage.
