Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This week I applied a thinned down black wash over the mahogany strips on the lower deck. I bit more work on this to get even coverage before I can then sand the wash back and expose the wood underneath. I haven't included a photo here, as on closer inspection of the photo, I could see areas that require more work. A tip I found very helpful a while ago is that the camera never lies. If something you've made looks ok by eye, sometimes a photo of it will reveal areas of improvement. Also, i spray painted all the guns and water-tight ammunition canisters. See attached photo. I also spray painted the larger flak gun for the lower deck, including washes, weathering, salt streaks and rust streaks. This gun is now complete and once I have the lower deck sanded back to a satisfactory level, I can fix this in place. The whole process took 3 evenings to complete. Any rust that did form, would of done while the boat was surfaced and so not have time to really take hold. Regards, Phil W. Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. Well it has been three weeks since my last update due to holidays, general household de-cluttering and a bit of decorating! I completed painting the upper and lower mahogany decks in matt black. This may seem strange when the mahogany looked good as it was and i must admit when I started I thought 'what have I done?'. The real U-boats had their decks treated with a black coloured anti-fouling paint. After some time at sea under the ravages of the salt water, this paint would wear away revealing the mahogany underneath. To this end I carefully sanded the black paint back to reveal the natural wood colour underneath. The attached photo shows the lower deck. Well that's it for now! The next plan is to start at the bridge and work my way back. I will be painting and fitting crew members first, followed by the various masts and periscopes before finally attaching the guns.  I've already spent a couple of evenings researching paint colours for the crew that will occupy the bridge and hope to take delivery early next week of the paint.
