Ok, with the exception of the head motor slamming from stop to stop, I have no other hardware issues. I have noticed though, that under app control, the head will slowly move left and right while 'gently' touching the head control in either camera mode or manual driving.
Also, under app control, has anyone been able to get him to shake his head? I can't. Again, it makes me point toward the controller.
I have taken the cover back off the head motor just to make sure that there wasn't anything hinky going on. Just for grins, I moved the hall effect sensor closer to the magnet but that didn't make a difference.
This makes me think it is NOT an issue with the motor, but maybe the controller.
So. everyone that has had the head slamming issue, did replacing the motor or the controller make a difference?
I can live with it, but don't really want to. I am afraid he is going to pull an Exorcist and his head is going to start doing 360s and come flying off.

Hi Fred I recall someone else has the same issue. He replaced the dome motor and it corrected the speed issue. Regards Mark

I hate to get a replacement not because it is a hassle on EVERYONE. I feel in part that I have harassed CS so much  I have also heard that the MCU is the problem. I wish that there was a way to get schematics or something to be able to do some troubleshooting. I would like to be on the team that fixes technical items, here in the US.  Well, thanks Mark. Well, I don't see any harm in doing some test since I will replace it. If it should be the motor, then may I can come up with a fix for everyone. Mark Please don’t feel that you have to avoid contacting CS for a new part. Part of the DeAgostini guarantee is that ANY defective part will be replaced, free of charge. There is no reason you should have to wrestle with a problem part and not utilize the parts guarantee policy,

I know, but if I can avoid it, I will. I hate cost over-runs due to simple stuff. Like with this being narrowed down to motor or MCU, I would like to be able to find the fix and people be able to fix their own and not push that cost back on DeAgostini. It seems like almost everyone or at least the majority of people that has problems are in the UK. Maybe they sent all the good stuff to the US.  I have a great Customer Service here in the US. Always willing to bend over backwards to help. They almost ALWAYS have issues in stock and if it has to come from the UK, it only takes maybe a couple of weeks. But I'm giving them a call tomorrow. Ok. I went through and checked the motor unit out thoroughly. I re-flowed all solder joints re-assembled it and re-installed into R2. Still the same thing. Unless it is a gearing problem or the sensor is bad it has to be the MCU. I think it's a programming issue. Probably a value that is suppose to be reset or something. The other thing that points me to the MCU is that he won't shake his head.
We will see.....

Just got off the phone with customer service. Now time will tell  I have faith this will fix things! Now that I have time, I need to sit and read ALL the stories in the manuals. I call them manuals now that the issues are in the binders. Ah the R2-D2 Book of Bedtime Stories  Fred admin wrote:

I had the exact same problem, my fault for not paying attention to the direction of the plug. It seems that if you plug the motor wire the wrong way round, you will destroy the encoder on the motor board. Got a new one and all is good now. hope this helps.

Makes sense. Mine has been correct since the get go. Parts failure? Design change? Firmware change? All 3? It happens. But given the overall design, I think it's still a great <fill in the blank> (mine is Learning Tool ) to have and explore with. Well. I got the replacement head motor in today. I replaced both the motor and the cable and my son is now alive and operating correctly. And ironically, it took 9 months to complete and be born. I am totally happy with all the folks at ModelSpace and DeAgostini. ModelSpace customer service were helpful every time I needed to call and/or getting the replacement parts sent out. DeAgostini has a great project. Minor although frustrating to some, problems were fixed right away and all worked out. I believe in giving credit where credit is due. I give that pat on the back when someone does a good job.
