Hi all I know nothing about this kit my brother bought it a couple of years ago and asked me if I wanted it for 60 quid (I will have to remove all the planking as he left the front former square and planked back from there so I would never get a pointed prow on it) the decking is awful (sorry jim) is it worth buying. He has all the brass work and dead eyes and stuff (it actually looks like a nice kit, just beyond his abilities) Ken's the name modeling's the game.

I'd say it is very much worth buying even if it does require a bit of work to put her right. Would be helpful if you could post up some pics of her present condition and then we'd see what would be needed to put you back on the right track..... Plenty of assistance and guidance available if you need it.... Regards Alan

Hi Ken £60 quid is quite cheep it all depends on what he glued the planks on with . If he used PVA the planking would come off quite easily with hot water if it's something else that might be a problem . If I got offered it I would probably go for it Martyn Building ? Completed. Hi Ken, thanks for the pics. From what I can see I'd say that one is definitely worth the price and can be salvaged. One problem I see is the lack of fairing of the ribs or the cleaning of their edges of burnt ash, but in this case that may work in your favour. The deck at this stage can be left alone until you at least get all the planking removed. I'm guessing he has used standard PVA and possibly pins to attach the planks, if so then the planks shouldn't be too much of a problem to remove. Using hot water and a small paint brush, brush water onto the glued joints, leave for a few minutes for the glue to soften then you should be able to gently ease the planks away. Work on a small area at a time and take your time with it. Once the planks have been removed then we will be able to see if the planks can be reused.
Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on....
Regards
Alan

Thanks Alan I will let him know I want it (will be quite a challenge last plank on frame ship I built was the amarti motor yacht Bruma, of course that had very (and I mean very) simple rigging ) Is there a way of checking if it's all true and square and if not is it difficult to square it up. Ken's the name modeling's the game.

Hi Ken the best way of seeing if she is square and true is to site down the keel to see if it's straight and not twisted and if you have a small set square see if the bulkheads are square to the false keel . Hopefully it is but it shouldn't be to much of a problem if it's slightly out. Hope this helps Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Sovereign of the Seas . Virginia . Scotland . San Felipe . The good thing about this ship is the shape of the hull is a bit easier to plank than some of the warship kits. I would be most concerned that the bulkheads are square because that will make planking very difficult Look forward to seeing what you make of this buddy. Carl

Lets get the planking removed first then we can look at whether the frame is true. Would recommend you construct a dry dock/build jig ready for when planking resumes.... Regards Alan
