The pictures I have of the main mast indicates that the bands on the mast are made of iron strips and not rope bindings as provided for the build. I have modified my build in this respect by using 2mm strips of masking tape about 6 layers gives a nice effect. This has the rough texture of the iron straps and as I am painting my model blend in well with the mast.The tape follows the shape of the mast better than the thread.
I did the same many moons ago when constructiong the anchors, again the anchors have iron straps to strengthen them. I also covered the brass anchor ring with some thread painted this black to emulate the large iron ring on the original. I like the look
