Hi. I'm not sure about the color of the ship. Been to the Vasa Museum and look at their color scheme which can be found on Pdf. It states that the red color of the ship is dark cadmium red + tierra di Sienna, just as much of each. The link to the page you will find here, unfortunately it is in Swedish but the name of the colors appears. Missandra

Information received from Fred Hocker regarding the color of the hull sides, is that the area between the waterline and the bulwarks was unpainted on the ship, but treated with tar. This would have given it a reddish brown appearance when the ship was new and would darken over time to a darker grayish brown.

Bearing this in mind I decided to stain this area using a redwood stain to depict the reddish brown appearance however, it is down to your own choice as to how you wish your finished build to look....
