Would there be a way to do the metal hull that would be easy for builders of every level? Probably not. I also own the original wooden hull version. Great kit, with clean lines on the hull. However, to re-release that kit without any mods would probably have had limited appeal. At least this way, it has brought the kit up to date with the remote controlled features. The parts also go together well (apart from maybe the gearbox, which everyone seems to have an issue  ). And, more importantly, makes it easy for all skill levels to build. There's a lot to be said for these 'screw-together kits - very therapeutic  Just my take on it. Cheers Gray

Issue 31:Hull section and second Rangefinder. Pack contents: Lower port hull section, Connector, 2x half director tower, Rangefinder dome, 2x Rangefinder arms, Screws. Basically, this section is just a repeat of the previous stage, but for the port side. Store any unused parts in a stage labelled bag. This completes Stage 31. Issue 32:Hull section and Accessories. Pack contents: Upper starboard hull section, Connection piece, 2x Life rafts, fan, Accessories, Metal details, Screws. The upper starboard hull section is screwed in place with three screws, as before. The two life rafts are attached to the superstructure with a little glue. They are marked on the back with an 'L' or an 'R', so you cannot get it wrong. add the fan to the rear of the superstructure, aligning the two pins. Next, glue the two hatches onto the deck, then position the control station and engine communication console in place with glue. The two ventilators sit either side of the deck opening, glue in place. Now the start of the 'fiddly' stuff  The parts on the metal frame are a pain to remove, being thicker than etch. The various parts are then glue in place. The platform is easy to bend out of shape, so care must be taken here when removing from the frame. Store any unused parts in a stage labelled bag. Issue 33:Motor for the forward Radar equipment. Pack contents: motor, cable label, Screws. An EXTREMELY short 'to do' list inn this issue! Take the motor, unravel the cable, and attach the label. Issue 34:Radar Control Centre. Pack contents: control centre, Radar unit, Base of radar unit, Mounting plate, Various small plastic parts, 3x Cogs, 2x shafts, Small metal parts, Radar antenna, Screws. Glue the six lockers in place on the sides of the control centre, Fix the two radar arms in place on the radar unit with a dab of glue, orientating them to pointing towards the radar antenna. taking the control centre, turn upside down and fit the two cogs and shafts. The final cog sits on top of the outer cog, so it meshes with the inner one. Attach the mounting plate with the screws provided. insert the shaft of the motor from Issue 33 into the centre of the cog, and screw on the mounting plate. Now for some more 'fiddly' bits. Remove the ring from the metal plate, and glue in place locating the two pins. Add the two sections of trim to the radar unit, being careful as they are differing sizes. The pins locate into the three slots. Next attach the two ladders onto the control centre. The last two ladders are attached to the superstructure, which would have been easier to do BEFORE attaching the director towers  Fit the radar antenna onto the front of radar unit. It needs to protrude above the top of the unit. Screw the base of the radar unit to the roof using the screw provided. The small plastic parts are indeed very SMALL, and easily lost to the carpet monster! Carefully remove from the sprues, and fix in place with glue. Store any unused parts in a stage labelled bag. Issue 35:A Keel section and a Display Stand. Pack contents: Fifth Keel section, Connecting piece, 2x Display stand supports, Display stand base, Screws. This issue sees more additions of the accessories from the last stage. Once that is complete, the control room is placed onto the lower mast deck, being careful not to trap any wires or disturb any of the small pieces added earlier. fix the bridge deck assembly to the superstructure, carefully running the wires down into the large recess of the superstructure deck.Turn the assembly over and screw together with the screws provided. The last two parts left over on the metal frame are then carefully removed and attached to the superstructure to form railings. Fit the connecting piece over the raised sockets on the keel section, and secure with two screws. Position the keel section so that it fits into the sockets on the connecting piece, and screw together. Push-fit the two parts of the display stand into the display stand base. Store any unused parts in a stage labelled bag. This completes Stage 35. I think the last photo shows just how big and heavy this build is becoming  CaptnBirdseye attached the following image(s):

Issue 36:Motor for the Foretop Radar Installation. Pack contents: Motor for the radar installation, Cable label, Screws. Another very short issue Remove the packaging, remove the cable label and wrap it around the cable, near the socket. Yep, that's it for this issue Store any unused parts in a stage labelled bag. Issue 37:The Foretop Radar and a Port Hull section. Pack contents: Lower port hull, radar unit, base of radar unit, Foretop command post, Base plate, Foretop command post attachment, Deck, 3x Cogs, 2x Shafts, Screws. Again, we fit a section of the hull, using 3 of the screws provided. There's a nice bit of detail on this hull section (not sure what it is or does but looks cool ). The deck sits in the recess on the top of the foretop command post attachment. using a drop of glue. Turning it over, we next fit the first of the 3 cogs. This is the one with a long collar. Insert a shaft into the hole in the centre of the cog. I found it easier to fit the other shaft into the adjacent recess next, then slide the next cog over it. The last cog, with a cross head recess on top sits on the first shaft, so that the teeth engage with the outer ring of teeth on the second cog. Attach the base plate using the screws provided. Take the motor from issue 36 and fit the shaft of the motor into the recess in the cog and screw in place. Turning the assembly over, fit the base of the radar onto the protruding shaft and secure with a screw. The radar unit then sits on top of the base. You cannot get the orientation wrong as there is a notch on both parts. Glue in place. Finally, glue the attachment onto the rear of the foretop command post, with the hollow area pointing downwards. Issue 38:The Foretop Radar and a Starboard Hull Section. Pack contents: Lower starboard hull section, Foretop command post gallery, Small accessories, Deck, Screws. The lower starboard hull section is attached as before. Next we attach the deck to the foretop command post gallery, using a touch of glue if needed. Attach the two sockets to the foretop assembly from issue 37. The flat area should be uppermost. Next i skipped the next section of instructions, and fitted 3 of the small accessories to the foretop assembly deck (thanks to Yorkshire Modeller for that tip ). It just made life easier. Once attached, it was back to the instructions and attached the two rangefinder arms (which are not easy to keep straight while the glue dries). The door, and the set of three lockers are then fixed in place with a little glue, making note again of the orientation. And that's it for this month. Next time we get the first part of the hull with the banding  Store any unused parts in a stage labelled bag. This completes Stage 38. CaptnBirdseye attached the following image(s):

Hi gray I have just completed issue 38 and noticed your radar arms are on upside down ,they have 2 holes for guard railing at the top and 1 underneath,yours have got the 1 hole at the top ,cheers mick.  Builds hms victory, suzuki gsx 1300 R hayabusa, honda C B 750, lamborghini countach L P 500 S, tamiya 1/16 rc full option tiger 1 tank,

Good spot Mick, and luckily an easy fix. The instructional pictures for that section, 05 & 06, are not great, as they have the tweezers covering the outermost hole. Issue 39:The Next Hull Section. Pack contents: Upper port hull section, Connecting piece, Screws. Another of those sparse issues In this issue we start to assemble section of the hull camouflage. As before, we align the hull section so it sits over the posts on the hull section. Once screwed in place, the connecting piece is fitted to join it to the rest of the hull. Issue 40:Fire Control Post details and Searchlight Deck. Pack contents: Upper superstructure x2, Searchlight platform, Locker structure, Searchlight parts x6, Searchlight glass, Decking, 4x ZAG artillery guidance devices, ladder support, Cooling coil, Rangefinder rails, Ladder, Searchlight cable. After the lull in the storm last issue, here we find we have masses to do! Firstly, we wrap the label around the cable, near the connector, and then threaded through the searchlight base. The Searchlight glass is fitted to the searchlight housing. Next we fit the LED into the backplate, applying a little glue around the outside, and mount the seatchlight assembly to it.The support then fits into the two slots on either side of the searchlight. The two parts of the arm sit with the cable in between, and glued together, careful not to get any glue on the cable. the peg on the end of the arm assembly is then glued into the recess on the support. Feeding the wire from the searchlight through the decking, this is attached to the searchlight platform. the locker structure sits just behind the light. The two part of the upper superstructure are glued together. The ladder is then attached. pass the connector end of the cable through the opening in the front of the superstructure, and glue the platform in place. The ladder support is fitted to the radar assembly from issue 38. The two sets of rails are then carefully attached to the radar arms. Finally, for this issue, we fit the four ZAG artillery guidance devices. Store any unused parts in a stage labelled bag. This completes Stage 40. CaptnBirdseye attached the following image(s):

Really enjoying this build so far. As someone who doesn’t quite have the time to be planking wooden hulls and just wants to screw/glue a few parts together now and again this seems ideal. I was looking at starting this myself but I think I’ve missed the boat - I seem to only be able to purchase it from issue 40ish onwards and the earlier issues seem to be extortionate prices on eBay. Currently building: HMS Victory

Hi Biggsy, thanks for looking in and your comments, always welcome. I know what you mean about the wooden hulled kits, as I have both of these (although never seem to get around to progressing further with it at the moment  ) I see there are issues on fleabay starting about £9, which apart from the first couple of issues, is what you would be paying from Hachette anyway. Good luck if you do decide to build her, I think you will find it cathartic, but can be testing when you get to the smaller etch detail Oh and making sure all the electrics work as they should  Regards Gray
