Hi Roy,

Thank you for posting, I think you will enjoy my next stage as the kit has not supplied coach guns, I will be scratch building a pair with covers to place with the saddlebags. This again will involve (as you know) more time but I am well on the way and will post as soon as possible how I built them.

Regards

Trev

Hi Walter,

Thank you for having a look at my build, with christmas approaching fast haven't had much time with the stagecoach, but I have started to work on a pair of scratch coach guns which I am finding fascinating.

UPDATE:

SHOTGUNS OR MESSENGER GUN.

First model shotguns were not supplied with the kit, so I decided to make a pair to fit alongside the saddlebags, this involved a search to find a picture plus information about how it looked and worked.

A Coach-Gun or Messenger was a double-barreled shotgun generally with barrels about 18'' to 20''ins long and placed side by side to be used for defence, and guard express shipments what surprised me was they were 10 and 12 gauge and used Black powder which will take a lot of time to reload.

First I made a Master pattern this will be made from plastic so if I needed to remake they will all look the same, to do this I cut around the paper shape and stuck it to a piece of plastic then carefully cut around it filed and sandpaper to shape.

Draw around the pattern on to a piece of wood (this is 5mm Oak) and keep as close to the black line to save file work.

I am making two guns so the next job will be to stick and clamp them together, I did this by using double-sided sticky tape and a spot of glue each end.

When dry remove from clamps this is the time to check for splits and faults marks and dents, also time to file and shape to look like one gun.

Sand both sides on flat sandpaper I needed a coarse grade to smooth Oak.

Next was to remove wood from the fore-end of stock to accept both barrels this is why I chose Oak because of its strength.

More work on the stock shaping and sanding and filing.

This I found interesting dip the stock in wood dye I used American Walnut this enhances the natural grain of the wood, also you can see I have started to fit the trigger and guard made from 1mm brass wire.

This is up to date now, next will be the making and soldering of the barrels.

Regards

Trev.

Hi Terry, thanks for your comments I see you have built the Stagecoach, I was wondering how you got on with it and did you find it a straight forward to build.

Hi Roy,

Bit more scratch today, I am trying to make both side plates from brass plate, that is the part that is covered with engraving but on this type of gun it will be clear but sprayed to match barrels, also a pair of hammers to fit behind the breach should be fun.

Hi Alan,

Raining all day today in Sussex just the day for modelling and cup's of tea's, as I said to Roy today I will be trying to make and fit side plates and hammers to the guns, the hammers will be made from 1mm brass rod heated and hammered to shape, fingers crossed it should show some sort of shape to represent the picture I have, time will tell.

Trev,

Have been following you from the start. Wonderful work and I have high hopes to try it. My request: could you share your sources or pics of the actual rifles here in your build. May help a few of us aspirants.

Merry Christmas,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thank you for looking in, I found all the information on Wikipedia tap in Shotguns Wild West or Coachguns 1885 or Messenger's Gun that should be ok, there you will find a picture and early manufacturers.
