Stage 58 – Rear Body Frame

Contents – Rear Body Frame
This part of the bodywork is very important because it unites the external panels that form the rear half of the VW Beetle. The rear body frame provides the mounting for the hinged engine cover and rear wings, which will be fitted in the next few stages. Once it is raced by the other components the body will be very strong, but in the meantime, be sure to store and handle it carefully to avoid distorting or twisting the long thin arms.
Store the parts carefully until needed.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 59 – Engine Cover Mounting and Hinge

Contents – Engine Cover Mounting, Engine Cover Hinge and Screws

The parts supplied with this pack allow you to prepare the hinged engine cover, (which you assembled in stage 3), ready to attach it to the rear body frame.
Start by taking the engine cover from stage 3. The engine cover mounting has two lugs to fit the hinge. Fit the curved arms of the hinge over the lugs on the engine cover mounting, making sure that the holes in the curved arms align with the slots in the lugs. Drive two SD16 screws through the holes in the curved arms to secure them to the lugs in the mounting. Make sure that the hinge opens and closes freely. If it is stiff, you may need to slacken the screws slightly.
Align the hinge assembly with the engine cover, noting the two lugs on the engine cover. Fit the hinge assembly, making sure that the two lugs go into the slots in the hinge assembly. Secure the mounting to the engine cover using two SD13 screws.
Store the assembly carefully until needed.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 60 – Left Rear Quarter and Sill Panel

Contents – Left Rear Quarter and Sill Panel and Screws.

Continue assembling the rear of the VW Beetle by fitting the engine cover and the first of the side panels which goes on the left of the car.
Take the engine cover assembly and SD07 screws from the previous stage. Take the rear body frame from stage 58, being sure to handle this with care to avoid distorting or twisting the long thin arms. Fit the engine cover to the matching opening in the body frame, making sure that the hinge goes through the opening from the outside of the frame. Turn the assembly over and fit the two mounting holes in the hinge over the two lugs on the frame. Use the two SD07 screws to secure the hinge to the body frame, checking that the engine cover opens and closes freely. You may need to slacken and retighten the screws to make sure that it fits the recess all round the opening.
Before continuing, secure the engine cover with two pieces of masking tape to prevent it from opening during the assembly. Position the left rear quarter and sill panel on the side of the body frame so that its two mounting lugs fit into the holes in the frame. Hold the parts together firmly. Working on a soft surface that won’t damage the paint, drive two SD14 screws through the rear body frame and into the lugs.
Store the assembly carefully until needed.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 62 – Right Rear Quarter and Sill Panel

Contents – Right Rear Quarter and Sill Panel and Screws.

Fitting the right side of the rear body stiffens the assembly enough for you to fit the rear wing provided in the previous stage.
Fit the right rear quarter and sill panel to the rear body frame making sure that the fixing lugs go through the holes in the body frame. Press the parts together firmly, making sure that the lugs go all the way in. Working on a soft surface, drive two SD14 screws into the lugs to hold the assembly together. Make sure that the parts sit flush.
Take the rear wing and SD11 screws provided in the previous stage. You need to fit the left rear wing over the left rear quarter so that its fixing lugs go into the holes in the body frame. In order to fit the wing into place, you will need to open the engine cover partially. Close it again before moving onto the next step.
Fix the wing in place with four SD11 screws, checking that the wing is fitted correctly, with an even joint line all round.
Store the assembly carefully until needed.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 64 – Rear Lights

Contents – Left and Right Rear Light Bulb Holders, Left and Right Rear Light Lenses and Screws.

The parts provided in this pack allow you to assemble the rear lights, brake lights, turn signals, reversing lights and mount them on the rear wings.
The inside faces of the bulb holders are marked ‘L’ for left and ‘R’ for right. The rear light lenses do not have identifying letters. Instead, compare the positions of the internals studs as shown in step 64B of the instructions.
Fit the left rear lens onto the corresponding bulb holder so that the two pins go into the corresponding holes, then press the two parts together until they fit flush. Fix the lens to the bulb holder with two SP08 screws. Now assemble the right rear lens and bulb holder in the same way and secure with two SP08 screws.
Fit the left light fitting onto the left rear wing by fitting the projecting pins into the holes in the left rear wing. Press it firmly into place making sure it is flush, then secure with two SP15 screws from inside the wing. Now fit the right rear light in the same way and secure with two SP15 screws.
Store the assembly carefully until needed.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 65 – Left Rear Window and Inner Body Panel

Contents – Left Rear Window, Left Rear Inner Body Panel, Left Rear Seatbelt, Left Rear Seatbelt Mounting and Screws.

The parts supplied allow you to start fitting out the inside of the body shell, including installing a rear window and seat belt.
Fit the left rear window to the inner body panel, placing the projecting tab over the mounting point so that the holes line up. Fix the window to the panel with an SP09 screw. Check that the window is free to pivot on the screw. This is how it is raised and lowered and you can adjust how easily it moves by tightening or slackening the screw.
Take the left rear seatbelt mounting which fits into the hole in the inner body panel. The mounting lug is shaped so it only goes one-way round. Fit the wire loop in the middle of the rear seatbelt into the groove running across the seatbelt mounting. Make sure you fit it the right wary round so that the end of the seatbelt with the buckle will end up on the outside of the mounting. Fix the assembly into the hole in the inner body panel. Fix the seatbelt mounting with an SP09 screw on the inside of the panel. Make sure you drive the screw all the way in to prevent it from touching the window and scratching it.
Take the rectangular plate on one end of the seatbelt and bring it round the base of the inner panel to the mounting point. Screw the plate to the inside of the panel with an SP08 screw so that the seatbelt is secured. Check that the seatbelt is not twisted and that the end with the buckle is on the outer side of the mounting.
Now fit the inner panel to the inside of the body, lining up the mounting holes with the lugs on the body. Make sure the panel fits flush and fix it in place with four SD07 screws.
Store the assembly carefully until needed.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 66 – Left Rear Trim Panel and Accessories

Contents – Left Rear Trim Panel, Window Winder Handle, Ashtray, Left Rear Frame Cover and Screws.

Finish off the area you started in the previous stage by fitting the internal trim, window winder and ashtray.
Fit the window winder handle into the hole in the trim panel. The hole is shaped so that the handle only fits one-way round. Press the handle firmly into place and fix from the other side using an SP09 screw. Now fit the ashtray into the recess which is shaped to match. It has two mounting lugs that fit into the corresponding holes. Press the ashtray firmly into place.
The left rear frame cover has a mounting lug which is D-shaped, so it only fits one way round on the trim panel. Press the frame cover firmly into place and fix with an SP05 screw.
Match up the three slots in the body with the three rectangular tabs on the edge of the trim panel. There is also a hole in the body to house the fixing point from the last step. Before fitting the trim panel, you will need to ease the seatbelt away from the inside of the body. Slide the trim panel behind the seatbelt until you can line up the fixings, then press the trim panel firmly into place and check that it fits flush all round.
Store the assembly carefully until needed.

This stage is now complete.
