I read the spec of the external power supply was DC9V - I'm assuming I could just wire in a 9V battery to replace it no?

You get two choices, 9v through mains adapter and then battery option which is 6v, 4x AA batteries. Just use the supplied battery box option. Mark

You could try ordering the external mains from DeAgostini but the one I received did not work due to reversed polarity. Bought this one from Amazon and works great. https://www.amazon.com/g...4_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm actually trying to avoid using the internal battery pack and also the need to trail a power cable down from the mount on the wall. I figured I could hide a 9v battery pack on the underside.

IF you want to use batteries I would not use a 9V battery. Using 6 AA in a battery pack would be OK, but the LED strips in the falcon will drain a 9V battery pretty quickly.
