Issue/Stage 57 Contains – Upper Engine Casing, Thrust Nozzle, Locking Collar, Engine LED, Reflector, Lens, Thrust Diffuser, Plant-on Detail (X7)

Finishing the Casing

As in previous assemblies match up the detail shown then press them firmly into the holes in the casing.

Assembling the Engine

Take the sub-assemblies from stage 55 and 56, together with all the parts provided this time. Fit the four pins on the thrust diffuser onto the holes in the lens. Note, one pin is smaller than the others, so it only fits in place as shown. Align the assembly with the thrust nozzle, matching up the notch in the lens with the internal rib on the nozzle. Fit the lens in place and press it in as far as possible.

Uncoil the lead attached to the LED and fit the tip into the hole in the reflector, making sure it comes through on the other side. Carefully bend the wire down so that it follows the curve of the reflector on the side opposite to the notch on the rim of the reflector. Fit the plug through the hole from the assembly from stage 56, pulling the lead through inside the engine detail towards the second hole at the rear as shown. Feed the wire through until the reflector is in the correct position.
Feed the plug through the hole in the lower engine casing provided in this stage and carefully line up the two mounting posts on the engine detail with the pins on the casing, making sure you do not trap the cable. Press firmly into place. Attach the curved end of the reflector onto the slot in the casing with the notch on the reflector facing up.
Line up the two halves of the engine and fit them together, making sure that the reflector goes onto the slot in the other half of the engine casing.

Press the thrust nozzle all the way onto the assembly making sure that the notch and rib line up. Fit the locking collar over the end of the engine, with its tapered end outwards.

Take the battery box you used in previous tests and plug in the lead from the engine LED. The light should come on, filling the diffuser with a red glow.

This issue/stage is now complete. Store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Assembling the Wing

Take all the parts provided this time, plus the sublight engine assembly from the previous stage. Align the inner wing frame as shown and fit it into the recess between the outer wing frames and the engine mount. Align the engine mount brace and fit it into the engine mount so its outer end lies on top of the inner wing frame. Place two XW02 screws into the two holes in the inner end of the engine mount brace. Continue securing the engine brace with two XW02 screws into these four holes as shown, then fit the brace to the inner wing frame with two XW04 screws as shown, followed by three more XW04 screws as illustrated. Next, drive two XW03 screws into the two holes as shown, followed by for XW05 screws in the final four holes.

Uncoil the laser cannon cable and identify the end with the socket. Fit the socket firmly into the recess near the wingtip as show. Route the cable as you have done in previous stages and as illustrated.

Take the engine assembly from stage 57, plus an XW02 screw. Feed the plug on the end of the cable through the hole as in the engine mount. Feed the wire through the hole so you can fit the pin and fixing lug on the engine into the matching holes in the engine mount. Holding the engine in place, turn the assembly over and fit an XW02 screw into the hole in the fixing lug to secure the engine in place. Again, route the wire as you did in previous stages.

Take the wing route cover and fit it as shown making sure you don’t trap any of the cables emerging from the notch, and secure in place with three XW02 screws. Finally, remove three plugs from the sprue and press one into each hole to conceal the screw heads.

This issue/stage is now complete. Store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Issue/Stage 59 contains – Pipework detail (x16), Power input units (Upper and lower halves)

Upper starboard engine.
Fitting the pipework.

Take the two halves of the power unit and fit the pins on the lower half into the holes in the upper and press firmly together.

Take the shortest of the pipes and fit the pins on the end into the two holes in the upper half of the power unit pressing firmly into place so it fits flush. Attach the thick pipe and align the D-shaped lug on the end with the matching hole on the upper half of the unit, pressing it all the way in.

There are two manifolds which are mirror images of each other. (Note, one might have a notch in the back, if so, use this as “A” as shown.) Take the first one as shown and fit the end into the hole in the pipe, fitting the two pins in the other end of the manifold into the holes in the upper half of the power unit. Repeat this stage with the other manifold.

Take the two straighter pieces of pipe and attach them as shown, noting which one goes where.

Take four of the curved pipes, making sure that they all match and curve the right way as shown and one of the rectangular plates. Fit the pipes into the end of the holes in the plate, noting which way they curve as shown. Repeat the next stage as before and assemble them to make a mirror image of the previous step so they look as shown.

Align the two big pins on the back of assembly “A” with the square holes in the lower half of the power unit and press into place fitting the pins on the end of all the pipes into the holes in the manifold. Mirror the next step to fit assembly “B” on the opposite side.

This stage is now complete. Store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.
