Hi All, I had some time over the festive season to try and get the brass blackened properly. I’m getting better results, but still not what I hoped for. Anyway, here is a breakdown of my endeavour’s thus far. There are excellent articles on Modelshipworld.com and Modelboatyard.com First soaked the parts in Acetone to degrease them followed by a scrub with steel wool. Then into the vinegar for 15min or so. I rinsed with water & allowed to dry. Then into the Brass Black for about 1 minute. Another rinse and allowed to dry. Unfortunately, only fair results. My latest attempt has improved sum what, but still not great. Once again, a scrub with steel wool and straight into the Brass Black for a minute or two. Rinse and allow to dry. Here are my conclusions: 1. The Brass Black is more than a decade old – perhaps a new one is in order. 2. Try not to handle the parts too mush after they have been through the process. 3. Make up sub-assemblies and blacken as a unit. The solution does not affect wood! 4. Do touch-ups once fitted using some Brass Black on an ear bud. I’m actually quiet happy with my results, as I said earlier they are not excellent, but I think the mottled, blotchy finish actually compliments the weathered look that I am trying to achieve on my model. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Hi All, Been off the grid again for more than a month now. Between the office, chores around the house and our daughter starting school there hasn’t been much time for modelling. Anyway, a small update today. I added the coils to the guns on the main deck. Really looking forward to starting the masts & rigging!!! Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Good to see your update Garth. Time is always a major issue - never seems to be enough to do everything that needs doing. I had a week away from work last week and was able to devote sometime to model building. But back to work this week so after sitting looking at a computer screen for 8 hours plus the eyes are not always willing to spend more time looking at models later in the day. Tony Happy Modelling

Hi All, Unfortunately, I am going to start with a rant about the kit. I try not to complain too much because its really easy to get caught up in it and end up complaining about everything. But I do feel that this issue needs to be addressed. The kit has been marketed at entry level modelers, and for the most part the instructions have been excellent, almost long-winded in some instances. Until we reached issue 119!!! We have been given 10 plans that are to be used to make the masts, yards, furled sails and all the rigging. We are then told to study the plans and are given a couple of images here and there. This is really annoying as there have been so many issues that have had no instructions at all – only some pics of a figure or barrels. Considering the Victory dedicated 20+ issues to the rigging. To compound matters, the plans are not 1:1!!! So, you can either use the printed dimensions to make up the masts and yards, or you can use the plans to build from. Either way should work, just don’t swap between the printed dimensions and those on the plans. These issues have been raised on other forums, let’s hope Hachette will take heed and update the instructions for any subsequent releases. The large success of part work builds, for me at least, is that the modelling process has been Project Managed very well. We are issued a manageable amount of parts each week, and the assembly is done accordingly. With issue 119, it feels like we have been dropped in the deep end and told to swim. So, in order for me to make any sense of things, I have drawn up my own schedule. 1. Planning. 2. Prep & parts. 3. Rigging tools & tips. 4. Making & fitting deadeyes to the chain wales. 5. Masts & Bowsprit. 6. Shrouds. 7. Stays. 8. Ratlines. 9. Yards. 10. Sails. 11. Running rigging & attaching sails. 11.1 Jib 11.2 Fore Sail 11.3 Fore Top Sail 11.4 Fore Top Gallant 11.5 Main Sail 11.6 Main Top Sail 11.7 Main Top Gallant 11.8 Mizzen Lateen 11.9 Mizzen Top Sail 12. Flags. Lets hope that this will help get this one done!!! "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Garth That sounds like a real headache but what what i read i think its common to many kits. This constructo Mayflower Has you fliting between a page and half of written instructions, a colour picture guide (which is fine on the big pieces but on the small details is very difficult to work out) and 2 sets of plans. I am sure you will overcome and that is a good start with the sequence plan you have drawn up. Hope it continues well. Tony Happy Modelling

Hi Garth. Sorry to read about the shortcomings of the Kit. It's all looked so well sorted until now. Your plan looks perfect. I'm sure you'll get through it really well and learn so much in the process. !! Malc.

Thanks for the shoulder to cry on guys Listening to other feedback it looks like its par for the course with some model manufacturers. I suppose i shouldn't compare it to the Victory - those plans were top-notch!!! Kind regards, Garth "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Hi All, Well, here's the first part of my rigging endevours 1 Planning. Having recovered from my earlier whines about issue 119, its time to get down to business. I have always wanted to make a full set of bellowing sails for my Pearl. It’s unlikely that anyone has these commercially available, so I will have had to make up my own. My goal is to make a set of sails with plausible accompanying running rigging. For this exercise, I needed to know in advance where all the lines were to be run and belayed. I needed to know where the yards attach to the masts in order to make the sails, and how many extra blocks will be needed and where they will have to be attached to the ship. The next couple of months were taken up by gathering as much info that I could about rigging and sails. My gaol being to make as much as I can ‘on the bench’, rather than attaching fiddly bits onto the ship in-between masses of rigging. So, for this, I needed a proper set of working drawings. First off, I drew the masts, bow sprit and yards to the dimensions on the drawings provided. I then drew a top view and made note of where the original lines are to be attached. Put it all together to make a 3D model. From there I drew the sails and I was able to figure out the running rigging placement and the respective belaying points. All the parts were then dis-assembled and laid flat ready for printing. Notes on my drawings. I am by no means a nautical engineer, as I mentioned earlier, my goal is to provide a set of sails for my model with a plausible set of running rigging. I cannot vouch for the accuracy or the correctness of my drawings. I started with the most basic lines and stopped when my drawing looked busy enough. My motto has been ‘… if it looks right, then it is right!’ Remembering that the Black Pearl is a ‘ghost ship crewed by the dammed’ and Disney have certainly used their own creative licence – they have the capstan rotating around the main mast!!! The drawings that I will be providing are my own design and may not be correct. I intend to share them as I make progress. I will upload the small image with a larger one to download printing. They will be on A3 and A4. The print instructions are on each drawing. Anybody may freely download and share them as they wish. Please credit me if you do. And, if you somehow use them commercially, any £, €, $, ¥, coming my way is really needed and much appreciated! My reference material: Books Biddlecombe. G.
