With regard the stem reinforcement, I think I have answered my own question. I have now watched the official video and it shows the back edge of the reinforcement plate completely cut off. but can someone explain why it was made this long and what was the cut out in the corner for? Is it a common set of parts for another kit?

Hi Goddo, step 3 of the instructions does say you will need to trim the rear edge until the slots line up with the slots in the stem post. Why it was done like this and why the top notch is there I cannot say..... .. You're doing a great job, well done.... Regards Alan

Thanks Alan. I just didn't think that I would be cutting off that amount. Chris

I saw these detailing brushes on Amazon the other day and thought they will be good when I come to the smaller area of painting, like figurines and gallery details. I placed a piece of 5mm wide plank next to the tips so that you get a better idea of how fine the smaller brushes are. goddo attached the following image(s):

Nice find Goddo, am sure you'll put these to good use.... Regards Alan

I have just completed the first lot of deck planking and thought I would place a cannon to see how it fitted. All of the cannons that I have built so far are too high in the five ports as well as hitting the bulkhead posts. When I first got the Victory kit, I remember reading that some builders were experiencing a problem with the position of the cannons on the lower deck. There were a series of posts back around 2011 that discussed this and the answer seemed to be to deepen the axle slots so that the carriage sat lower.Looking at my cannons, if I do this, the carriage will be sitting on the deck? For a problem like this to have been apparent almost from the beginning, I am surprised that a remedy, such as slight lowering of the deck and/or raising of the gun ports had not been incorporated into the instructions. Could someone let me know if this is the only answer to the problem apart from shaving off the bottom of the wheels, which seemed to be an option in 2011?

Yes, this is pity since some of the early modellers discovered this problem and alerted the rest of us who were coming up behind. I did suggest that Tom amend the Official Build Diary but got told off for interfering and suggesting that there was something wrong even when it was obvious from the diary's own pictures.
Luckily, I was able to reposition the gun ports when I first cut them out but it seems you are beyond that now. The other option is to point the barrels slightly downwards which will take it away from the top of the port.

Thanks for your reply John. I think I will be making a mixture of changes. Raise the axles, slightly flatten the wheels and raise the rear end of the barrels. Strange, but I just checked stages 49 and 50 of the official build and the cannons fit perfectly without any changes that I have mentioned?

They are certainly high in this picture and the guns have been pointed downwards.
Also bear this in mind when you cut out the ports on the quarter deck. I found that you will hit the same problem and so you may want to reposition them when you come to cut them out.

Thanks for the warning, John.
It wouldn't have taken much to attach a build revision slip with the magazines for future purchasers.
I'll certainly try and rectify the fault.

Yes, I agree. One of the problems is that they seem to be on the defensive all time instead of admitting errors and putting them right. People would have a lot more respect and patience.
Instead, we get problems like this showing up for new builders years after they have been identified.
I just need to finish my build now and move on.

Good morning and a Happy Easter Monday to everyone. I had a couple of hours yesterday to spend on The Victory and decided to build the gratings in Stage 47/48. I found that the precut strips were of such poor quality that I have only been able to make up the five small gratings while the rest of the strips were unacceptable. I think I read that Artesenia Latina manufactured the kit (?) so I looked online (Cornwall Boats) to get some replacement parts. Due to the pandemic, and the Easter holiday, there is little chance of actually speaking to anyone but I cannot see anywhere, the details of the grating kits that are available (ie depth, cutout spacing, thickness etc). The part code number does not help me at all. Can anyone tell me the part number I need to order to get things moving again. please? I realise that I can reorder the pack again from DeAg but I would like to get some modelling done as soon as possible. Thanks for your help. Chris.

I have been giving some thought to my problem of cannon alignment with the gun ports on the upper deck where they were sitting way too high. What I decided to try was to cut off the uppermost strip of cannon side support panels, recut the grooves for the pivot pin then continue the build as per normal. This results in the gun barrel being lowered about 1mm. Below I have shown a comparison of the normal and the modified cannons which don't really look all that much different. The difference becomes more apparent when the two alternatives are offered up to the gun ports. I will be playing with the "wedge" under the barrel to get the cannon looking central externally. While I think this may be a solution, for me anyway, I would appreciate any comments...good or bad. Thanks. Chris goddo attached the following image(s):

Hi Chris, This is the exact way how I sorted out the same problem on my build. https://forum.model-space.co.uk/default.aspx?g=posts&m=263028#post263028I think it was a design flow in the kit, others have the same issue. Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

That is a brilliant solution, Chris. Not for the purist obviously but these guns will never be seen - apart from the barrels poking through. Looks really good, well done.
As I said earlier though, double check the quarter deck guns as you won't want this solution there.

John, I think the purists would be a bit annoyed that the problem arises after the kit has been around for so long. Still, it is a problem and we’ll get round it somehow I expect.

I am at the stage where I will be making up the support beams for the quarterdeck. On laying a planking strip across the bulkhead support brackets, there appears to be a 2mm gap between the number 12 bulkhead and the guide plank. (See photo below). The relationship between all other bulkhead brackets and the plank seem within tolerance, apart from one at 16 which will need a a little sanding. My question is: Is it OK to build up bulkhead 12 by 2mm to make the decking smooth or will this have repercussions later on in the build? goddo attached the following image(s):

Hi Goddo, you should be fine to build up bulkhead 12 by 2mm.... She's cominga long very nicely, well done.... Regards Alan
