I have been making up the beams for the main deck but before I start planking, I tried a few barrels, just randomly placed by the guns, plus a few rope coils. There are two different sized barrels which I think you can see clearly but I wondered if you had any thoughts on their size? Not sure if barrels of these sizes would be near the guns? Any comments would be appreciated. goddo attached the following image(s):

Why do you think the wooden barrels are placed there, Chris?

Hi John, I'm not sure, which is why I am asking the forum. Would they not have had gun powder barrels that close? If nobody thinks they look correct, I'll take them out again. They are just free standing at the moment. Chris.

No, you will need them on skids on the quarterdeck.
It would have been too dangerous to have barrels of powder on the decks like that. The gunpowder was brought up from the lower decks by young boys as it was needed. Because they would scamper around the ship during battles they were nicknamed 'powders monkeys'.

Quarterdeck planking in progress. I am mildly surprised at the differences in plank thickness. A bit of sanding will soon put that right, I hope. goddo attached the following image(s):

Great diary Chris, and I’m liking what you’re doing with her Your solution to the gun height solves at least one problem. Regards Gray

Thanks for your kind comments John, Alan and Walter. Much appreciated. I am now at the point of marking out the gun ports for the quarter deck. Two pilot holes drilled so far. Not looking good is it!! goddo attached the following image(s):

I'm glad I'm seeing this before I get to this stage. Seems the solution would be to raise the ports to the proper height before cutting. How much would that impact the looks of the finished model? ~ Burt

Brutis, The tops of the gun port openings are only 2mm from the top of the planking. To do as you suggest would mean at least one more full width plank. I don't know if this is acceptable or not?

I looked closer at your photo after my previous post and saw that indeed, the port would be higher than the planking. This is a bit disconcerting. ~ Burt

I´m afraid i wont`be much of a help - it`s been years since i`ve been to that stage - and i actually can`t remember there ocurred such a problem.
At that time it was only common knowledge to not cut those gunports until the guns could be placed on the deck, as the height could vary.
I used much thinner planks for the deck - so maybe that`s a reason i didn`t have that problem.
Only solution i can thinks of now - is to file down the cannon`s wheels - i would assume that won`t be visible that much with all the ropes around - and it would gain you a few millimeters.Greetings, Walter

Well regarding the problem of cannon barrels completely out of synch with the gun ports, I cannot raise the gunports and the decking is now laid so I can't reduce the thickness, I think I will do what I did on the lower deck and trim the top of the gun. This will lower the barrel by almost 1.5mm and then add a (much) thicker than normal wedge to tip the barrel down. Hopefully the ropes around the cannons will disguise the problem. Not totally ideal which is sad but I can't think of a better solution.

Sorry Chris but I don't think I am going to be able to help much with this.
Being forewarned but also for other reasons (I needed to keep the ship upside down to work on the tiling and I didn't want to damage any upper planking), I went off-instructions at this point and never completed the upper planking until I needed to in order to construct the gallery and TBH, I can't remember what I did to solve the problem now other than continual checking as I went.
Funnily enough, I am at the stage of fighting the deck as we speak and they seem to be OK.
I'm sure the solutions you came up with before will still look OK here though. There is a mass of stuff to go on the deck plus all the rigging to see through, so it the issue will hardly show.
