Assembling the Frame


Start by taking all the metal frame sections and screws that came with issues 71 and 72. Fit the ends of the base frame over the lower rear frame, ensuring that the locating pins go into the matching holes. Secure both sides of the frame to the lower rear frame, using XW01 screws as shown. Take the lower mid frame and side frames from issue 71, and the four side struts and the lower front frame from issue 72. The struts are marked “L” for the left and “R” for the right. (Other parts are identified in the similar way.) Holding the right base strut as shown fit the ends over the lower rear frame, fitting the locating pin into the matching hole. The middle of the strut will lock into the base frame. Secure the end of the strut with an XW01 screw. Fit the left base strut, and secure with an XW01 screw. Take the lower front frame as shown and fit the lower front frame over the ends of the struts and secure both struts to the frame using XW01 screws as shown below. Now take the right-side strut and fit the end over the lower front frame securing it loosely with an XW01 screw as you need the strut to be able to move in and out during the next steps. Take the right-side frame, as shown noting which way round it goes, and fit its two locating pins into the holes in the base frame and the right side strut. Hold the framework together and fit the end of the side strut over the lower rear frame. Secure the rear of the strut with an XW01 screw, then tighten the screw holding the front of the side strut to the lower front frame. Now fit the left side strut in the same way as before, securing it loosely with an XW01 screw. Fit the left side frames mirroring the previous steps that you took before with the right frames.

Fitting the Frame

Place the fuselage and wing assembly upside down on the work surface, ready to fit the framework, noting which way round it goes. Press the framework into place then fix it with XW02 screws at all five points as shown below.

Completing the Frame

Take the parts provided, plus the bulkhead assembly from stage 65. Take the right bulkhead reinforcement, which fits as shown and secure it with XW02 screws. Take the right cargo bay reinforcement and bottom strut and fit them together as shown. Fix the parts together with an XW04 screw. Note, the magazine shows these as an XW01 screw which should say XW04 screws.
Fit the assembly over the right bulkhead reinforcement, pressing the hole in the end of the locating pin. Copy the steps for the left hand side frame. Take the bulkhead assembly as shown and fit the two notches under the end of the metal reinforcements. Fit the metal reinforcements to the bulkhead using two XW02 screws. Fit the right strut between the bulkhead reinforcements and the lower front frame, fitting the locating pins into the holes. Fix the side strut to the bulkhead using an XW02 screw. Mirror the previous steps and fit the left hand struts and fix it to the bulkhead as shown.

This issue/stage is now complete. Store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Issue/Stage 74 Contains – Torpedo Rack Base, Torpedo lower Bodies (x4), External Power Socket and Wiring.

Fitting the Socket


Take the socket and lead provided this time which is labelled with the number 20. Identify the corresponding socket 20 as shown, on the circuit board fitted inside the rear fuselage. Carefully use a pair of tweezers to fit the plug into the socket. As before it will only go in one way round.

Making the Connections

Take the main power switch from issue 71, which is connected to the wire labelled 19. Plug it into socket 19 on the circuit board. As access is limited some long nose pliers or heavy-duty tweezers may help. Take the nose assembly from stage 37 and unscrew the switch retaining plate and take out the gear lock out switch and its wiring which is labelled 10. Plug the switch into socket 10 on the circuit board. Undo the screws holding the antenna that picks up the remote-control signals and take out the antenna and its wiring which is labelled 9. Fit the plug into socket 9 on the circuit board.
Take the droid motor and gearbox assembly from stage 70. This has three leads, labelled 15, 16, and 17, and fits on the end of the rear fuselage as shown. Press the droid motor into its mounts at the end of the rear fuselage, but do not screw it in place. Then plug the droid motor lead 15 into socket 15 on the circuit board. Plug the droid motor switch lead into socket 16. Plug the droid lighting contacts into socket 17.

Fitting the Batteries

Your X wing is powered by four ordinary AAA dry cell batteries, and you need two more for the remote control. You will only be fitting the batteries temporarily at this stage, as you don't want the power to come on accidentally why you are still assembling the model.
Fit four AAA batteries as shown on the underside of the fuselage and fit two more into the remote control.
Lay the fuselage back down on the work surface and place the cockpit assembly from stage 64 close enough to it so that you can plug its lead labelled 11 into socket 11 on the circuit board.

Testing the Electrics

Turn the main power switch on by sliding it across as shown. Press the top right button on the remote control to test the laser generators on the wingtips. All four lights should come on. Press the bottom left button on to test the engine lights. Once again, all four should come on together as shown. Get a friend to support the model or rig up a stand on to hold the fuselage above the work surface with room for the wings to move. Then press the centre button to check that the wings open and close when you press the button again.
Important Notice: If the motor continues to run when the wings are closed, switch off immediately. Check you have attached the wings correctly and that you have added the 1mm spacer as described and shown in Stage 71 of the Official Build.

Hold down the landing gear lockout switch as if the undercarriage were in place. Make sure the wings don't move if you repeat the previous steps.
Press the bottom right button and check that it makes the spindle of the droid motor spin. Press the top left button and cheque that the cockpit instrument lights come on.

Troubleshooting
Tracing Problems
As you have tested individual items when they were assembled, if something doesn't work, any problems might have occurred during connection.
If nothing works.
Make sure the batteries are all fitted correctly
try the main power switch in case you've turned it off instead of on and check that it is plugged into the circuit board correctly
check that the remote control is correctly assembled
make sure the antenna is plugged in correctly
If one laser or engine light doesn't work
check it is correctly plugged into the circuit board
If the wing, droid or cockpit buttons don't work
check that the items they control are correctly plugged into the circuit board
check that the remote control is correctly assembled
If the wings don't stop when they should
check that the sensors 13 and 14 are correctly plugged into the circuit board. Also see the notice above.
If the landing gear lock doesn't work
check that it is correctly plugged into socket 10 on the circuit board.

Assembling the Torpedo Rack

Take the four halves of the torpedo bodies and the base of the torpedo rack. Examine the torpedo bodies and note that one of the holes nearest the end is a round hole whilst the other is a D shaped hole. Similarly, one end of the base of the torpedo rack has round pins while the other has D shaped pins. Match up the holes and pins in one of the four positions nearest the centre of the rack, then press the lower body in place. Fit all four hearts of the torpedo bodies in the same way.

This issue/stage is now complete. Store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Issue/Stage 75 Contains – Torpedo Upper Bodies (x4), Torpedo Warheads (x6), Torpedo Rack Spacers (x4), Torpedo Nose Cones.

Assembling the Torpedo Rack


Take the assembly from stage 74, plus all the past provided with this stage. Take one of the torpedo upper bodies and line it up with the first of the lower bodies, as their shapes only match one way round. Press the fixing pins in the upper body into the hole in the lower body. Repeat the previous steps to assemble all four torpedo bodies. Take one of the spacers, which are all identical. Hold it as shown, match up the pins with the holes in the torpedo bodies and press the pins into the holes and fix the spaces in place as shown. Line of the second spacer as a mirror image of the first. Fit the spacer into the holes in the torpedo bodies and then fit the third and fourth spacer in the same as shown.
Now take the first of the warheads and one of the nose cones, fitting the pin on the nose cone into the small hole in the warhead. Press the nosecone into place so it fits flush as shown. Repeat the process to assemble all other five warheads and nose cones.

This issue/stage is now complete. Store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Completing the Torpedo Rack


Take the assemblies from stage 75, plus all the moulded parts applied this time. Matchup the two halves of one of the torpedo bodies and fit the pins into the holes and press the torpedo bodies together. Take one of the warheads from stage 75 and line it up with the end of the torpedo body and press firmly into place. Now repeat the previous steps to assemble all six torpedoes. Take one of the torpedoes and align it with the rack, the same way round as the previous four. Fit the holes in the torpedo into the locating pins at the end of the rack and press it firmly into place. Repeat these steps to fit the torpedoes to the other end of the rack so the assembly looks as shown. The next torpedo fits in the two of the pins on the central spacer as shown. Fit the remaining three torpedoes into the other pairs of the pins on the spacers. Now take the top of the rack and align it as shown so you can fit all six pairs of locating pins into the holes in the tops of the torpedoes. Make sure the tabs in the middle fit in the slots in the base of the rack, then press both ends together so that the top and bottom of the racks fit flush.

Extending the Wiring.

Take the extension cable nine provided this time and uncoil the full length of the wire. Fit the plug on one end of the socket 09 on the Control Board, making sure it is the right way round. It may help to use tweezers. Make sure you press the plug firmly into place, as you won't be testing the connection until stage 77. Fit the socket on the other end of the cable through the slot as shown in the bulkhead pulling it through, feeding the rest of the cable all the way through the bulkhead.
