Wow Garth. That's an impressive amount of work you've done on the rigging and sails. I know absolutely nothing about this but it looks OK to me. Malc.

Hi All, 2. Prep & Parts. I suppose that this should have been dealt with under the ‘Planning’ section, for some reason I thought it better suited to ‘Prep & Parts’. To make the full sail version some extra parts will be required. I will include a summary of all the blocks & deadeyes. My thoughts on colours. Realistically, the Black Pearl should be entirely black, but I have used my own licence here on the decks & internal walls below decks. I feel that the black is just too overpowering, and a little contrast is needed (for the model). As with the rigging, I have decided to err on the realistic side of things. I have chosen to use black standard rigging and tan running rigging. We are only issued with tan thread in the Pearl kit. This is unfortunate, as painting the rigging once fitted is not ideal. You end up with black spots all over your model. First prize is to use black thread (Another dig at Hachette!!!) Fortunately, our supplier here in South Africa had a good supply of Victory issues on hand, so I bought those. Black Pearl Issue 119 – (x2) extra, 3mm blocks & deadeyes HMS Victory, Issue 55 – (x2), 60 belaying pins, Issue 90 – 0.8mm & 0.15mm Black thread, Issue 94 – 0.5mm Black thread. Note on blocks. The instructions call for some blocks to have an eye be inserted into the end, I depict this in my set of drawings as well, but I am not going to do this on my model. I will attach the end of the thread to something on the ship rather than the eye. Anyway, back to business. Although I am keeping the rigging standard, I have stained all the blocks & deadeyes black. I prefer the alcohol-based stains (actually a dye) for this as they do not clog-up the holes and they dry within a couple of minutes. First, I did a test on two blocks, just to see if it was going to work. I then decanted some stain into a small bottle and then dumped some of the blocks in, let them soak for a couple of minutes then laid them out to dry. I did them in a couple of batches. I got our daughter to sort them into their sizes and put them into their own packets for use later. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! Hi Guys, Thanks for looking in and for the kind words. It's much appreciated. I still have to figure out how to reduce the size of my Rhino image and still make it legible. The usual methods haven't been working. Kind regards, Garth "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Hi All, 3 Rigging Tools & Tips I thought that I will add this before I tackle the bulk of the rigging. There is no specific order of things, basically they are just as they have come to mind. Looking at my first pic, here are the tools that I cannot do without; (from left to right) Bobbin holder with bobbin – this is such a helpful little tool for wrapping thread. It is available from fishing tackle shops. Those that sell fly tying equipment will have them. The bobbin is a basic sewing machines bobbin and is available from haberdasheries. Bees wax – I’m not too sure where this can be bought commercially. Fortunately, I have quite a large stock on hand. In South Africa it is available at farmers markets, I would assume this will be the same abroad. (My other pastime is shooting black powder firearms. I have an old ZAR Martini, and I use the beeswax to make bullet lube) I run the thread through the bees wax a couple of times, it removes all the fluff and makes the thread malleable and keep its shape. Sewing needle – nothing exceptional here, just a basic sewing needle, perhaps a couple of sizes. Needle threader – also available from the haberdasheries. Buy a couple as they brake easily. A suggestion in one of my books is to remove the wire from the plate and attach it to a rod about 150mm long. Unfortunately, I broke mine, hence the pic of the standard one. Hackle pliers – another indispensable tool, for me that is, from the fly-tying fraternity. I use it to hold the thread onto my blocks as I tie the knots. I will add some pics of how I do this later. Its also great for keeping tension on lines as you work with them. They are not too expensive, so I would suggest buying a couple. I have 5. Tweezers – I like the offset nose type. Use the one that you are most comfortable with. Embroidery scissors – here is the deal breaker for me. You need a pair of scissors with a sharp point that can perform a precision cut on the last mm or two of the blades. Buy the best that you can afford and don’t be tempted to use them for anything else. I have a piece of RC engine fuel tube that I slip over the end to protect them should they accidently drop. They are available from haberdasheries. Belaying tool – I made this tool and in a later post will show how I made it and how to use it. Ruler – standard 150mm ruler. Looking at the other pics. White glue – I mix my white glue in a ratio of +/- 50% to water and paint this onto my knots. This prevents them from coming undone. Some people prefer using cyno as it dries instantly, and the knot is permanent. I like the white glue solution as first, it does not stick my fingers together , and second, if you soak it in water again, the knot can be undone, and the line can be readjusted. An old paint brush is used to apply it. Rub some pure white glue (or cyno) into the ends of the thread. This makes for a solid piece of thread at the tip of the line that is easily pushed through blocks. Use a small drill bit to clean out the holes in the blocks as you attach them. I wrapped some tape around an appropriate diameter drill bit to make a friction fit for my bobbin and used the battery drill to load it with thread. To be continued……. Hi All, Continuing the tools post. Making the Belaying tool. This is one of those tools that once I started using it, I don’t know how I have ever managed without it. It’s design comes out of Mastini. F. (1990), Ship Modeling Simplified: USA, Page 104-105. 1. I used a piece of 3.175mm brazing rod about 150mm long. 2. Flatten the end to about 1mm thick. 3. Neaten up the end with a file. 4. I cut a small groove into the tip with a razor saw & widened it a little with a needle file. 5. Made the tip narrower to fit between the belaying pins. My next pic is of the Hackle Pliers at work. I wrap the thread around the block & hold in place with the Hackle Pliers. This frees up my hands to tie & glue the Knots. I have 5 of these and make up the blocks in batches. My next post will show the belaying tool at work. To be continued……. "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! Garth really interesting post as some of those rigging tools you are using I never knew existed. That bobbin holder looks very effective. Only thing i could not see is any details of the twine/rigging rope you are using from those big spools. Is that sold for modelling or is it some other sort of product please? Tony Happy Modelling

Tony Hi Tony, Thanks for your reply. The bobbin holder & hackle pliers are from a fishing tackle shop that carries fly tying tools. The fly tiers have really figured out the use of thread etc. They have some amazing tools!!! The two big spools of cotton are from a haberdashery that sells more heavy duty stuff - in the lines of upholstery. etc. It's called upholstery cotton. I just guessed the thickness. I took the thinnest one & the thickest one. It's also relatively cheep. Both spools cost less than one small roll of cotton from my local hobby ship!!! Hope that helps. Hi All, Rigging Tools & Tips…cont. My last instalment on Rigging Tools. The Belaying tool in action! Image 1 – guide the thread using the belaying tool up to the underside of the belaying pin. Image 2 – wrap the thread around the bottom of the belaying pin and tension the thread. Image 3, 4, 5 – guide the thread around the top of the belaying pin. Image 6 – wrap the thread around the belaying pin two or three times. Image 7 – twist the thread in your other hand to form a loop. Then move the loop down the thread up to the belaying pin. Image 8 – make sure the thread forms a half hitch on the belaying pin. Image 9, 10 – pull the thread tight to secure the knot. Once you are happy with the line, apply some watered-down white glue to secure the knot. Hope this is of use to somebody Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl.
