3 Rigging Tools & Tips

I thought that I will add this before I tackle the bulk of the rigging. There is no specific order of things, basically they are just as they have come to mind.
Looking at my first pic, here are the tools that I cannot do without; (from left to right)

Bobbin holder with bobbin – this is such a helpful little tool for wrapping thread. It is available from fishing tackle shops. Those that sell fly tying equipment will have them. The bobbin is a basic sewing machines bobbin and is available from haberdasheries.

Bees wax – I’m not too sure where this can be bought commercially. Fortunately, I have quite a large stock on hand. In South Africa it is available at farmers markets, I would assume this will be the same abroad. (My other pastime is shooting black powder firearms. I have an old ZAR Martini, and I use the beeswax to make bullet lube) I run the thread through the bees wax a couple of times, it removes all the fluff and makes the thread malleable and keep its shape.

Sewing needle – nothing exceptional here, just a basic sewing needle, perhaps a couple of sizes.

Needle threader – also available from the haberdasheries. Buy a couple as they brake easily. A suggestion in one of my books is to remove the wire from the plate and attach it to a rod about 150mm long. Unfortunately, I broke mine, hence the pic of the standard one.

Hackle pliers – another indispensable tool, for me that is, from the fly-tying fraternity. I use it to hold the thread onto my blocks as I tie the knots. I will add some pics of how I do this later. Its also great for keeping tension on lines as you work with them. They are not too expensive, so I would suggest buying a couple. I have 5.

Tweezers – I like the offset nose type. Use the one that you are most comfortable with.

Embroidery scissors – here is the deal breaker for me. You need a pair of scissors with a sharp point that can perform a precision cut on the last mm or two of the blades. Buy the best that you can afford and don’t be tempted to use them for anything else. I have a piece of RC engine fuel tube that I slip over the end to protect them should they accidently drop. They are available from haberdasheries.

Belaying tool – I made this tool and in a later post will show how I made it and how to use it.

Ruler – standard 150mm ruler.

White glue – I mix my white glue in a ratio of +/- 50% to water and paint this onto my knots. This prevents them from coming undone. Some people prefer using cyno as it dries instantly, and the knot is permanent. I like the white glue solution as first, it does not stick my fingers together , and second, if you soak it in water again, the knot can be undone, and the line can be readjusted. An old paint brush is used to apply it.

Rub some pure white glue (or cyno) into the ends of the thread. This makes for a solid piece of thread at the tip of the line that is easily pushed through blocks.

Use a small drill bit to clean out the holes in the blocks as you attach them.
I wrapped some tape around an appropriate diameter drill bit to make a friction fit for my bobbin and used the battery drill to load it with thread.
