I ordered up the bobbin reel holder and a set of those tiny pliers - sure they are going to be very useful.

Masts & Bowsprit Cont. Part 02 Down to business with the masts, finally feel like I'm moving again! First off, thanks to Mark (the owner of our company) for the loan of his mini lathe. Using the lathe to taper the masts has really simplified the process. First, I turned down the masts to the dimensions on the plans and then cut everything to size. Please note if you are building from my build. The diameter measurements given in the instructions are not the same as the parts into which they must fit. So, all the parts that I turned down were too small. I only noticed this when I started assembly. Pity I did not measure first. I had to build-up the parts with thin slivers of masking tape. Other than that, everything went pretty much as the instructions show. Next, I added the 3mmx3mm blocks under the fighting tops of the fore and main mast for the running rigging. Lastly, before painting, I drilled and glued in all the eyelets with superglue. Painting, as with the rest of the ship – matt black with progressively lighter dry-brushing. Remember to clean any paint out of the eyelets once it has dried. Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. On hold: Bismarck, Golden Hind, Flying Scotsman, Victory Cross Section, SOTS, Tiger 1. Wish list: USS Constitution.

That looks neat Garth. I think making the masts is one of (if not the) most difficult part of the build. Yours look really very well done. Tony Happy Modelling

Excellent work on the masts Garth, certainly a job made a lot easier with the use of a mini lathe but it still requires skill.... Very well done.... Regards Alan

Coming along nicely Garth. I bought a small lathe some time back and it's been brilliant for tapering masts. A real time saver. Chris

Tony Hi Tony, You are right, some of the bits are turned down to about Ø1.4mm. The other challenge is keeping everything square I used superglue & activator here. It seemed to work. Hi All, Masts & Bowsprit Cont. Part 03, Lashings & blocks Fitted the blocks and the lashings to the masts. Remember if you are building from my diary: - add the 6 extra blocks below the fighting tops below the main and fore mast - add the extra block on the fore mast for the jibs running rigging - add the extra blocks on the bowsprit for the additional stay and the jibs running rigging - start the bottom lashing on the main mast about 5mm higher than in my drawings. It got in the way of the capstan. Apologies for all the different colour casts in the images. I was out on the veranda on a windy day. The clouds would come over, next bright sun, then cloudy again ….. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! [
Hi Chris, I have been looking to buy one (at the right price), unfortunately this one is on loan and will have to go back Kind regards, Garth
Hi Garth, the lathe that I bought is a lot more basic than the model in your photos. I got it from my nearest model shop in Windsor and so far, it has done all that I have asked of it. I have been using a sanding block to taper my masts and booms and with a bit of practice they fit nicely. Maybe not as professional as some but it's fine for me. Chris
