Hi guys,
need a bit of clarification please. I have just completed my main mast and rigging, and upon looking at it closely i need to know if i have made a mistake in which plane the 6 holes in the topgallant mast lie.
During construction the magazine stated to mark two holes in an octagonal face of the lower part of the mast, then turn the mast 90 degrees in order to mark the line for the 6 further holes higher up the mast. Would this not result in all the holes being in the same plane but just drilled from opposite sides of the mast ?
Looking at the mast plan, it appears to indicate by the dotted lines where the holes should be when viewed from the side, that the top 6 should run for and aft, 45 degrees to the port/starboard holes at the bottom of the mast, where the brass wire fits through the lower of the two ? Confused

The six dotted line holes mean that the holes run forward to aft (front to back), the two holes at the bottom of the topgallant are side holes as in port to starboard side (left to right side).

thankyou for your super prompt response Mr T. I thought they might so i guess i will have to plug the wrong ones and drill 6 right ones. Had i misunderstood the instructions or are they slightly misleading ?

Whilst i am on, i am following the painted option of the build, and looking at the pictures on the mast plan, they show the mast sections and spars yellow and black, whereas we are told to paint all parts above the fighting top black? Any reason for this ?

Its more a case of understanding the plans, though it does tell you to rotate the topgallant thru 90 degrees then drill.

If you are going the painted route, then the instructions say to paint black the yards & booms, what you term as being yellow & black is wood stain & black paint for those going the stained route which is a reprentation of what is seen in the photos.

Model making is a learning process, we've all made a mistake or two over the years, but trick is to learn by them rather then repeat them.

Thanks Tomick, that is value I greatly admire.

Would you consider a thread on the things that you learnt during the building of the Victory?
