No problem Ronald, we'll get you through this. Been having a look at your build and yes, there are problems with the stern we have to address but, in all honesty, even though the build does appear to look grubby, I have to admit I think overall, you're doing a very good job. The planking looks really good and very, very neat. I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised just how good it will look once you start the sanding process to clean her all up, the hull is going to look fab. So all in all, forget the grubby appearance and post up often so we can keep you on track. Well done, your efforts are definitely paying dividends.....Cool Cool Cool

Will be back to you soon....

Regards

Alan

yes I know it doesn't look pretty at the sterns corners as you said a little grubby from those photos but I cleaned it up a little better, and I am grateful that you think I am doing an ok job, be glad when you can give me guidance on fixing the stern as you can see I removed the last of the stern planking

Hi Alan
before you begin helping me with this stern issue as I like to call it.
would like to ask if you read post 20 when I asked about the stern being to
shallow is the height to short now especially when I mentioned in post #17 that
I might have put to much of a curve in the false keel and accidently took off a
tiny piece off the top as well as seen shown in the photos I know it can't be
the thickness because the transom is suppose to be flush with the keel right so
the problem is either in the curvature and the height of the stern what you
think

Hi Ronald, taking your ship building experience into account I have tried to come up with the easiest way to get you back on track. I have used your image and highlighted the area in blue, this area I want you to fill with wood filler and leave to dry. Do not do any sanding at this stage, just concentrate on getting the wood filler applied where needed. Try to avoid getting too much wood filler on the actual rib, highlighted in the second image.

The second image also shows what we will be trying to achieve in these areas, then we will move on. Post up 2 pics when filler is dried, one looking onto the stern and the other of the stern from side on.

Regards

Alan

photos so I saved them and will try to print them out along wit your
instructions once I buy some putty I begin the task of putting the areas you
mention which brings up a question you said try not to get putty on the rib it
self do you mean the forward part of the rib I understand part of what you are saying by viewing the first photo, but that second photo is not mind you are welcome to use one of my of mind as you did for the first photo to use one

Hi Ronald I am at roughly the same stage on my victory and I must say out of the six wooden ships I have built the stern planking on this one has been the hardest to get right of any of them . I used a combination of soaking the wood in warm water, an electric plank bender and steaming over a kettle to get a twist. Just a thought but do you think the problem with the height on rib 30 May caused by it not being fully seated in the keel.I know this has caught a few builders out .
Man he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand
He gave birth to poetry
But one day will cease to be

thanks for your input who ever you are, as far thinking # 30 rib was not seated in the false keel No it is fully seated, I just faired the rib to much because Alan believes the stern is too shallow, but I keep your plank bending suggestion in mind thank you

The images not showing immediately is a forum problem, a problem that has proved very difficult to resolve. If you refresh the page then normally the images will show. You may have to refresh a few times, depending on how busy the network is....

Just upload the images, I'll still be able to see them at some stage....

It is not the stern that is too shallow but the profile of the strips coming around the bend. This can be caused by not inducing the twist at the end of the planking strip. The first strip is the most important strip, it is from this that the profile of all the other strips rests....

Hi Alan
I only have two questions for you regarding the stern planking problem.
1) before I start to apply the wood filler you said try not to get filler on the
rib it self, so the only conclusion I got is try not to get filler on rib 30
the back rib as in the second photo you sent me with the blue mark you only
want filler on the top of ribs 31,32,33,34 the areas I will be re-fairing
right along with filling in the nasty cavity at the bottom as in the first photo
2) In order to get the tight radius in the first plank not counting twist did I
use my plank crimping tool for that and if so which side of the blade do I
use the wedge edge and is the planking suppose to be soaked as well. P.S. you
never did tell if the sanded curve on top of the false keel is ok or not
I thought I sanded it a little to much thank you

Try to avoid applying filler along the edge of the rib, marked in red in the photo below. Blue area's require filling to be attached.

Don't do any sanding yet, nor do I want you to go fairing or bending strips. We'll worry about that when we get to that point..

Thanks Alan
that is what I thought on the filling part ok, and no I will not be going
any further then what you mentioned before and now, but what about the area
on top I had brought it twice, don't worry I'm not going to do anything to
it just want your input on it, is it ok or did I make to much of a turn on
it thank you

HI Alan
please view these photos of the back and side views of the stern filled with
wood putty if you can see it disregard the tiny strip of card board on the back
side of the rib it can easily be removed once the putty dries it was used to
keep putty off the back as requested, let me know if I did it correctly or if I
need to add more putty or not I only did one side first will do the right side
if the left side is ok thank you
