DIsplay stand work continued...

I stained the frame to the same colour what the large cabinet has.
Cut the base from a thick card and covered with double sided tape.
The green fleece has been stuck to it then then I cut it around.
Finally, after the stain dried, the base was fixed to the frame.

For trial, I placed the deck sections onto the stand.
I'm happy with the result.

Now just need the name plaques get made and wait for the mini LED spotlights to arrive from China... will take couple of weeks I reckon.

There is one improvement should be made, the centre deck section with the officers is a bit 'empty', it cries for to place something on it... maybe a ship wheel with the compass binnacle, some barrels and buckets, not sure yet....
I'm open for your suggestions.

Yesterday I got a quote from Timpson to make the five brass plaques.
It's £78...
Maybe it's just me but I found it a bit pricey.
So I decided to use my good friend Google to find a way to do it myself.
Didn't take long to land on youtube and find a fairly easy way to transfer printout from inkjet printer to wood.

I though I'll give a go and do a trial.

I placed a wide double sided tape on a cutting mat with backing paper kept on the underside and fixed the ends with cello tape.
Then I laid leftover thin planks from the cut-out (as I was not doing it ) on the tape as tight as possible then sanded the surface slightly to have a smooth surface for the transfer.
Then I took an A4 size self adhesive sheet and removed the sticker side, keeping the backing paper only.
Then I fead the backing paper into the printer ensuring that it will print on the shiny, non-sticking side. This will make the ink don't penetrate into the paper.
Then go and print.
Once the print came out I carefully laid it on the planks to transfer the ink.

Not bad for the first try, but couple of issue occurred.
- first, I forgot to flip the image horizontally so after transferred it got mirrored.
- second, unfortunately the sheet was a bit curled when I removed the sticker from it hence the printer jammed it a bit causing smudged result
- third, accidentally moved the sheet during transfer hence there is a shadow.

But the process seems promising, will try again hoping get a better result than the first try.

Very nice work, that is going to look great in the cabinet.

A very nicely thought out display and for such small parts they are wonderfully painted.

This afternoon I made three small stands for the deck section name plates and stained them to the same colour as all the frames.
Just need to wait for them to dry and then the name plates can be stuck onto them.

Hello Guys,

Pair of ships wheel and binnacle chimney arrived from CMB so I was able to start decorate the officer's deck section.

- Using leftover dowel I turned the shaft of the ships wheel and from 2x5mm strip carved the front and rear pillars.
- The front pillar was stained black, decorated with gold, the shaft and the rear pillar stained walnut.
- All assembled and fitted to the deck with rope.
- Using various strips I constructed the compass binnacle. The inside painted white and for the glass imitation I used a cutout from a clear plastic bag. Details added to the front hen the whole cabinet stained black.
- Eyebolts added to the sides and to the deck and finally glued in place, and anchored with black thread.
Further details added to the deck using leftover cleats and water buckets.

I like the final result, it doesn't look "empty" anymore.
Almost finished, just need to fix the name plates to the base and ready to be placed into the display cabinet.

It looks fantastic.I'm definitely going to get some inspiration from you regarding your display - world class.
