Thanks for looking in and your great comments Malc and Mark, very much appreciated as always. Cool ThumpUp

@ Malc - Initially I thought the same, maybe an oil pipe but there are other pipes and fittings to go on the gearbox in the next update which I think are to do with the oil system. The photos above show that the forward end of the shaft/pipe exits the clutch 'bellhousing' from a recessed part of the housing and looks more like a shaft to me in that respect? I think if it was a pipe it would likely be of a more flexible design and would just exit towards the gearbox through a 'union' type connection, probably being routed along the side of the engine and sump and without the need to come through the bellhousing?

It would be interesting to know what it is if anybody else knows? Cool ThumpUp

Hello all,

It's a day later than I intended, but time for the next update, which involves the second part of stage #4.

Photo below shows the instruction sheet diagram. The version 'B' part isn't relevant to my build as I'm doing version 'A':

The parts needed for this stage after clean up and preparation:

The same parts after building and painting and a light wash added to bring out the details:

The small tank (I think it's an oil tank) to which is fitted a couple of miniature 'bungee' type chords, made from coated wire and two small exhaust retainer springs which have been cut midway to make four ends? I used some small ones from my stash of 1:20 F1 car upgrade parts as the ones supplied in the kit looked a little bit oversized. The mounting plate at the back of the tank came in two separate halves for some obscure reason and you can see that the joint between in the parts was filled and sanded but I wasn't too particular about how smoothly I finished the sanding as it can't be seen anyway when the tank is fitted to the gearbox so would have been just wasted time and effort? The tiny springs that I used can be seen in the third photo down:

More of the assembled parts:

Photos below show all of those assemblies fitted to the gearbox, along with the various lengths of clear tubing and larger bore black pipes added. The large black pipes were a bit too shiny for my liking so I airbrushed them with matt varnish first to dull them down and make them look more like rubber hoses:

That's it for this update and also these are the last parts to be fitted in the engine section of this build apart from the exhausts, exhaust support brackets and mesh intake guard which will be fitted later. The built power unit will now be safely stored away as I move on to the chassis/cockpit and front suspension/brakes in the next updates! Looking forward to doing something that isn't engine related or nearly half as fiddly!!

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed. ThumpUp

If it wasn’t for the modelling mat you’d think that was the genuine article. Love Love The wash you’ve applied is spot on, just tones it all down to make it look so real.ThumpUp

You can’t help but admire the qualify of these kits, they just look soooooo realistic. And your making an excellent job of her too Kev ThumpUp
Did you ever find out what the tubes/rods are for on the right-hand-side of the gearbox? I asked our service manager, who is also a F1 fan, but he said it was before his time!!! The only things he could come up with were:
A) gear selector down-shifter, or
B) some form of overdrive

Hello all,

Just a short update. I have been prepping and assembling the main cockpit tub. I was going to prime and paint this area using Alclad 2 paints but decided to see what the white metal parts looked like when simply sanded smooth and polished. It looked quite convincing compared to photos of the real car so I did the same to all of the rest of the panels. When assembled it looks spot on to me. After polishing the parts, using a sequence of ever finer grades of paper, ending with Micromesh 12000 grit, they were then finished off with some 'Autosol Metal Polish' then they were finally sealed with a thin coat of 'Kristal Klear' liquid floor polish to prevent any tarnishing over time.

The great globs of two-part 5 minute epoxy resin glue that you can see in the photos won't be seen when the outer body panels are added, I just wanted to add a lot of strength to the joints, and I didn't apply any epoxy glue to the forward most bottom joints since that area is where the front shock absorbers are fitted and the glue would be visible through an opening in the body panel? I just used thin CA glue for that part of the joint. You can see some quite bad pitting of the cast white metal parts in the photos, even after polishing, but I've done some test assembling and none of it will be seen in the final finished cockpit as you will see at a later stage?

The kit instructions for this part of the build, section #5:

The parts that make up the main cockpit tub before cleaning and polishing:

After cleaning and polishing:

There is a nicely cast name plate in the underside of the floor which some people like to fill and sand out, but I quite like it and as I was choosing to simply polish the white metal part and not paint it, filling and sanding was not an option:

All of the parts are now glued and assembled. Any slight gaps in the joints that you can see won't be visible later as other parts are added over them, so I'm not bothered about those and to be honest they look bigger in the photos than they actually are!:

I have checked all of the dimensions of the assembled cockpit from one end to the other and from side to side using a digital vernier gauge and it is spot on, square, and fits to the engine firewall perfectly. All good!

That's it for now, next update will see work commence on the front suspension parts, the foot pedals and the brake master cylinders, etc.

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed. ThumpUp

Kev.

Another great update Kev.
You're right about the polished metal. Nothing looks quite like metal, as the real thing. Great work.

Hello Gray,

Sorry, I missed your post before adding my update! Blushing

Thanks for your comments, very much appreciated and yes, I had to be ultra careful when handling those springs! Blink Laugh

Interesting what your service manager suggested. I don't think it's a gear selector downshifter as the main gear selector linkage is on the other side of the gearbox (right hand side looking forward)? It could well be some form of overdrive, though I'm not sure if that technology was around when this car raced in 1967? As yet I've not found anything conclusive.

Thanks for your thoughts Gray. Cool ThumpUp

Kev.

Hi Kev

Great build. Cool Cool

I`ve found some info on the gearbox r/hand side pipes.

Appears, if I`m reading it right, that the final drive was lubricated by a pumped system which had a filter further forward in the main unit. Hence the pipes.

Link to article below:

Info found is on the first page (right hand side) of the pdf.
