Regarding filament, you mentioned about the use of supplied filament, which with the id box would have been a few years old by now I would have thought.

Something I have picked up from the groups on social media is that PLA doesn't like moisture at all, and can absorb it from the atmosphere. If it absorbs too much the filament won't print as well, as during the heating the moisture boils out and ruins the molten filament in the hotend and thus the print can look bad. It can be dried out with a de humidifier I believe though. This is one of the main reasons its supplied vacuum wrapped. I have no idea on timescales, that's just something you grow to leave over time I reckon and it varies from type to type and between brands too.

Be sure to store is in a dry place. Some people even make dry boxes to store filament if they're not using it for long periods.
