Hi Rob!
Yes, I'm a little unclear about double planking too! It says it is on the front page, but on other build diaries of the AL Surprise, it seems single-planked.
I'm keen to know the answer, as it will probably decide whether-or-not I do this build; I much prefer double-planking.

Hi shipmates. I understand she is single planked. Read it on here somewhere. My HMS Beagle is double planked and it hasn't helped much except increase the sales of Pollyfiller. I've just removed some of the second planks to start again. If I can get Beagle right I'm hoping that Victory's single planks will be less problematic. I hope to post some pics in the build diary "HMS Beagle warts and all". So look it up in a few days time if you want a laugh and I have learnt how to up-load them.

Would be nice if Admin would help to clear this up. The fact it said that it was double planked is why I decided to buy it. Regards

Looking really good Rob, nice and clean!
Do you have any advice on how you cut the mast holes out? I've got a small hand drill, a round file and a craft knife at the ready but if you've got any specific advice it would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Jonny.

Also while I'm here, I see you also have the same problem with the deck sticking out a bit around the central bulkheads. Are you planning to just file/sand down the offending areas so that they don't get in the way of the hull planking?
I'm guessing this will be the way to do it, since it is a false deck it won't matter to just cut it back, however as this is my first built I'm wary just in case I haven't thought of any consequences.
Thanks,
Jonny.

Hi Eccles as to your Question about the holes for the masts I cut them out after I had fully planked the falls deck, which makes it hard to see the wooden hole underneath. Next time I after laying the first central plank, (that's what it tells you to do with the surprise,) When the first plank has dried I will try cutting the holes then as I will be able to see the hole underneath for reference. Then the same for the opposite sides of the central plank, using the hole underneath for reference. Hope you know what i mean. And as for the problem with the deck sticking out a bit around the central bulkheads. Are you planning to just file/sand down the offending areas so that they don't get in the way of the hull planking? Yes I am going to sand them to the profile of the ship, also most of what you can see are my planks over lapping the edges that I have yet to sand to the profile. Regards

Just to let you all know this kit is going to be single planked. Single planking is fine but not ideal for beginners because there is no room for error.
I was told when I first signed up that it was double planked then told after I signed up that it wasn't. Admin and De Agostini are not very helpful and don't actually know anything which is why I cancelled my subscription. There are much better frigate models out there that are cheaper and double planked.

Hi and thanks for the info. I have emailed both Admin and DeAgostini, but they don't answer my emails about the subject. They haven't even answered my email about my email instructions I haven't had yet for Surprise, there's a surprise. I wouldn't mind but I have just subscribed to HMS Victory as well, talk about customer care lol Unless they supply me with extra planking to double plank it. Now that would be nice of them Kit features: * Traditional double planking on frame wooden hull .PS Sorry for rant. Regards
