Phil,

What what are your plans for the rest of your life? BigGrin

I can't believe what I have had the privilege of seeing such a masterpiece been built. Do you know what you plan to do with the completed ship?

Hi Tom,

I have lots more model making projects lined up once this build is done.BigGrin

What plans do i have for it? Well, initially, i intend to sit back with a beer and just admire it for a short while. I owe it to myself to do that and not have to fret about building it anymore. After that, who knows? I'm toying with the idea of 'lending' it, not donating it, to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum for 1-2 years. I say lend it, as i feel after having spent over 7 years building it, to donate it would break my heart a little. If the organisation is up for that idea, then maybe approach a u-boat museum in Germany and lend it for the same amount of time. After that, across the pond to the USA? It's all conjecture at this point. Got a lot to do before i get it past the finishing post, but i'm hoping this time next year will see it completed.

Regards,
Phil W.

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'.

So i made a start on the Galley/Junior Rates Mess which involved lots of time staring at photos, making mental notes of positions of key items.

I then made a start and fabricated the water-tight hatch that is located on the forward bulkhead of the Junior Rates Mess and connects it to the Control Room.

The attached photo shows different diameters of 0.5mm thick acrylic sheet, cut out with a compass cutter and glued together.

So the kit provided bulkhead door, which i didn't use, as i scratch-built an open version connecting the Engine Room to the Motor Room/Aft Torpedo Compartment, meant i could use it for the Galley! Ace!BigGrin

The attached photo shows it painted, varnished, pin-washed and ready for fitting.

The attached photo shows the Junior Rates Mess bulkhead door fitted. It was only later i realised i had positioned it slightly too high and i also forgot to add the hinge!Blushing So, this will come off next week so i can add the hinge and then reposition it a little lower.

The attached photo shows the scale plans i drew up. I also fabricated the dividing bulkhead which will separate the Galley from the Junior Rates Mess, including the cut-out and the door. Also in the photo are the basic shapes of what will be stores lockers and the base and one side only of the cooker, both for the Galley.

I never cease to be amazed by the amount of detail you get into such a small space.

Good afternoon from 'The Dockyard'.

Progress has been made on fitting out the Galley this week.

I started off by scratch-building the cooker. See attached photo. It's not quite complete, that's a job for this weekend. I just wanted to gauge length, depth and width, as space is at a premium in this small space.

When i came to test fit the sink, i realised the door way, in the dividing bulkhead between the Galley and Junior Rates Mess, was in the wrong place and needed to be off-centre. So i made another!Blink

The Junior Rates Mess is fitted out in wood, so rather than try and paint plastic to look like wood, which has mixed results, just fit the real thing instead!BigGrin So i ordered a strip of walnut veneer, 1.0mm thick, 100mm wide and 1 meter long. The dividing bulkhead between the Galley and Junior Rates Mess, is wood covered on the accommodation side.

After quite a long time spent cutting and shaping the veneer, i glued it with PVA to the acetal template i had made, the one with the off-centre door way. As soon as the PVA soaked into the walnut, the veneer started to twist and warp!Blink

Plenty of bulldog clips were used and also clamping the acetal/walnut sandwich in a vice. I managed to straighten the piece, apart from a couple of small waves, which i bent out by hand. A couple of hairline cracks formed in the walnut as i relieved the stress in it, but these aren't noticeable and the whole thing is pretty flat now. Next time i'll use superglue, as this sets the veneer hard in seconds, as it soaks in and prevents warping!BigGrin
