With both assemblies taped up as needed it was time to apply the glass panels. To create these I use the typical scenic water. There are several brands out there and to be honest, I have used a few and I cannot tell the difference between them They all tout that they are the best at drying, eliminating bubbles, realistic look, etc. But to me they all turn out the same. Either way, choose your favorite (there are several available online for around US $15 for a few ounces).

It only took a drop or two of liguid in each glass pane. I did three at a time, a single side of eight sides, and let it dry for about 10 minutes before doing the next side. After all eight sides were complete I let them dry for about 2 hours and then came back and did them once again. The scenic water contracts as it dries, so the second layer helps create a thicker pane of glass.

Once the second layer was dry I went ahead and remove the tape. Lastly, I touched up the areas where the liquid had gotten onto the face of the metal. I simply application of some black paint and all looked good. I like how these turned out and will use this same sort of method for the windows on the stern and great cabin windows.

Now it's time to put the bottom piece on. I freed the two bottom pieces from the sprue and cleaned up the edges with a needle file. I also files the surfaces to give some grooves for the paint to bite. Also, it is important to anneal these as I will be bending them when it comes time to attach them to the stern of the ship.

As with the rest of the lantern, I went ahead and attached each bottom piece to a piece of scrap wood - the same piece I used for the lantern - in preparation for painting. Finally, and I have failed to mention this in the past, I cleaned each piece with acid and let it dry thoroughly.

An acid bath for the brass/metal pieces, if they are to be painted, helps clean the surface of oils and allows the paint to adhere much better. The acid bath I use is about as simple as it gets. I pour a wee bit of distilled white vinegar into a small canister and dip the piece into it. I swirls it about for 30 seconds or so and then remove it and let it dry. It is very important that you let it dry completely before you try to apply the paint. Of course, you could skip the acid bath but in my experience it makes a big difference. Without it, the paint tends to flake away at the slightest brush against something.

Once the acid wash had completely dried the next step was to venture outside in the sweltering heat and spray paint. Should mention now that I use a black primer that I also use for miniature figures. Benefit here is I can also obtain the exact same primer color in liquid form. The advantage being I can spray paint the primer, then glue the top to the bottom, and once everything is dry come back in with a brush and paint and do any touchup that I feel is necessary to get a nice finished look.

Overall I am really happy with how these turned out. I did the best I could trying to show how the glass panes turned out. Sadly, my photography skills are about the level of a 2-year old so the photo doesn't do it justice. The panes are actually translucent and look very good. If I had chosen to add LED lights to this model, a light within these lanterns would have shown through very nicely.

Confession time:

These pot holders just look strange to me. I can't tell you exactly why, maybe it's the pattern, or the size, not sure, they just look strange to me. I am also not a big fan of the through dovetail joint. Don't get me wrong, this is a classic wood joint but I just don't think it was traditionally used on a top surface. Typically, these days, you see them as joiners for drawers and the like. So this isn't me sticking to any type of period specific thing, it is simply I just don't like the look as it is used on these pot holders.

Second confessions:

When I first saw these were pot holders I thought to myself "my goodness, how many pots did they use for the galley?" Stupid, stupid me. After reading through the Anatomy of the Ship for the Bounty I found that the great cabin was actually converted to a green room and the entire space was utilized for tables and shelves to hold plant pots. I have not yet found how they kept the plants alive given the environmental conditions onboard a ship, especially below deck. And the amount of light that actually penetrated the stern and great cabin windows was quite limited doesn't seem to me to be enough for plants to flourish.

Another fun fact:

The redesign of the Bounty, remember from my earlier post it was originally to be named the Berthia, converted the great cabin into a greenhouse. And the designed called for just about every square foot of the space to be covered with potted plants. Not just on the deck of the lower deck, but also pot holders on the walls, as well as on the sloped areas by the stern windows. There were literally hundreds and hundreds of places for potted plants.

Now for the model:

The pot holders were really straight forward and don't need any real additional descriptions. However, as I mentioned earlier, I am just not a fan of the final look so I am contemplating ways that I can make it more to my liking. I may also decide to leave them as is. For now, and until it is time to assemble the main deck (month 10) I can dwell on it. So give me a couple weeks and I will have a decision.

The winch column was next. The four pieces that form the main assembly were pretty straight forward. When joining the three pieces that form the two sides and the center be sure to align them along their bottom edge. Then, glue the top piece into place. To finish the main part off you will need to sand the top piece flush with the main body and then come back with a fine grit sandpaper.

The instructions call for a shortened brass nail to be used to hold the three teeth in place. However, the holes for the nail were a bit larger than the nail and it didn't provide a nice finished look. To adjust for this, I trimmed the sharp end of the nail off a bit shorter than then total length, leaving just enough space for a second nail head to be glued into place on the opposing side. The end result was a nice finish nail head on both sides of the column yet the tooth was able to move freely.

Lastly, I painted the heads of the nails with a matte black so that it adhered to the overall scheme I am going for.

I may decide later to glue the teeth into a specific position, but for now will leave them free hanging. Also, I will apply a poly to this once I understand better where it will go. Don't want to take it any further now just in case I need to make some adjustments.

That's about it for Episode 9. Shouldn't be but a week or so and Episode 10 will be here. Looking forward to working on the main deck and getting closer to some of the hull planking.

Cheers!

Just received the confirmation email that month 10 is on its way! While I await its arrival I went ahead and began assembly of the davits. The only reason for this is that I am simply enjoying this build immensely and find myself needing to work on it as often as I can. So I read ahead to not only understand how the build plays out, but also to see if there are bits and pieces I can work on while waiting anxiously for the next shipment.

The davits I can complete for the most part. However, there is the one eye-bolt that comes with a future shipment. But this is no big deal...I can get the main parts done and then attach the eye-bolts once I receive them.

The top part of the davit is a bit tricky in that it takes a lot of patience and some careful work with the very tip of a sharp blade and a nice clean, round, needle file. After carving out a groove between each set of holes about 1/32" deep (there are laser lines on one side of the piece as a guide) on both sides of the piece I then went ahead and carefully started to carve a rounded shape. The objective is to make these resemble pulleys, or at least something that a rope could move through fairly smoothly. I initially cut away small little bits near the holes and then went back in with a round needle file to smooth and round things off a bit more. It is important you take your time and not be too aggressive with this as it will likely result in chipping away the small piece of wood that should remain between the two pulley grooves.

Once I had everything carved it was a simple thing to attach to the main part of the davit. Once the glue had dried I went ahead and sanding everything down in my typical manner.

Month 10 arrived over the weekend so I was able to get rolling again. This month's subscription also included all the tiny bits and pieces needed to add details to the ship. I am quite impressed with the quality of these pieces. The belaying pins are made of wood and of excellent quality. Typically, in kits like this, I have received the stubby metal belaying pins - these are typically not well scaled and never appealed to me when on a ship. The wood ones are my personal favorite and I have bought many to replace the metal ones. But in this case, the wood ones came with the kit. Excellent!

Also, the gratings are of really nice quality. These are fairly simple things, but typically I have seen kits come with gratings cut from less than superior wood and the results are different width's and poor fits when trying to assemble the pieces to make a grating. Again, excellent job on these as well.

NOTE: This is a slight mod. Although the gratings are per the instructions I did modify the framing using some scraps I had left over from a previous build.

Using the well produced pieces for the gratings, I went ahead and started constructing the covers for the lower deck. Here is where I did veer a bit off the kit design and did my own thing. I wan't particularly impressed with the frames for the gratings that the kit provided as I am going for a bit of variance in the wood types. So I took some old stock I had from previous builds, made sure I had enough to follow this path throughout the rest of this build, and went ahead and made my own frames for the grating.

For those who are new to the fun, making the gratings is quite simple. One key thing that I do to glue the pieces together is to simply brush on some wood glue that I have diluted about 50/50 with water. It is important to note that I am not staining these gratings. If I were, I would stain them before I apply the glue.

Once the glue has dried you need to carefully cut them to size. Take your time with this. If you do not, you will end up snapping the little ends off these things.

Once I had both covers completed, I went ahead and attached them to the lower deck.

It's time to move onto assembly for the main deck; however, before I did that I needed to attach the pot holders and stove to the lower deck. I first applied a coat of wipe on poly to the entire lower deck and hatch coverings. I also applied a coat of wipe on poly to the pot holders. Once the poly had completely dried I went ahead and glued the pot holders in place per the instructions.

For the galley stove, I was particularly keen on how it sat on top of the deck. Instead, I decided to cut away the area of deck where the stove would go so that the stove would be set into the deck. One key aspect of this approach is to paint a little bit of black to the now reckless area so that any tiny little gap that may exist when placing the stove would not show. Overall, very happy with the results.

Now I can move on to the main deck. I decided to remove the deck supports as I was not a fan of them. They are not actually what would have been on the HMS Bounty and are instead an aid for attaching and aligning the deck beams. If you are new to this sort of thing I strongly suggest you stick with using the supports as it does make things a bit easier.

A key component of building the main deck is to make sure it is about as exact as possible, especially where the mast holes need to align with the lower deck mast holes. Because I am not relying on the prefab deck supports which have cutouts to help with this alignment I need to be very careful that I build to scale. To help in this effort I went ahead and created a couple full size print-outs of the main and lower deck. To do this I simply imported the respective page from the instructions into a vector editor and scaled things. Then took that to the local office store to get a cheap print-out. I have these full-scale files saved as PDFs, but need to make sure I am not breaking any forum policy before sharing them. I will have a later post on this once I have clarification. In the meantime, here are some lo-res images of the end result.

Time to assemble the main deck. My approach is going to be getting the entire deck assembled and then attach it as one piece to the hull. Started with the stern section and will make my way towards the bow. Using the full-scale prints that I made has made this effort much easier. So far I have the first few sections shaped and glued and things are fitting nicely.

The rear-most section when connects the stern with the sides was the trickiest. This takes a bit of time and effort as I found I needed to remove a bit of the cross-beam where it was bumping against the stern post.

I am breaking the main deck into sections in a manner that allows me to be sure that the masts line up properly down through the entire structure and that masts align bow to stern as well. Once I had the main deck built from the stern up to the mizzen mast and all was fitting nicely, I went ahead and stained it and attached it to the ribs.

Before the glue set I put the mizzen mast in place temporarily to ensure alignment.

Decided to also include a bit more detail on what is received with Month 10. There are lots of bits and pieces that come with month 10 (and a couple of the other months) and as I was going through taking inventory of everything I thought it would be good to share what I do when I receive a subscription.

As soon as possible after receiving a subscription I make sure I have a clear mat and begin taking stock of things. I refer the that months instructions and ensure that I have received all the required pieces. However, for Month 10 the instructions merely indicate a "detail pack". Well, this pack has hundreds of bits and pieces. Regardless, I separated each and noted what I had before putting them into individual organizers. Separating the pieces and grouping by like objects will help a lot when it comes time to find these things and use them as instructed.

IMPORTANT! There is an error in the instructions for the main deck framing. Please make the following adjustments:

Part 10-05
Swap the numbering for pieces 11A/9A and 11B/9B as indicated in the image below.

These pieces are very, very similar however, if you try to follow the numbering on the instructions you will discover that the cross beam will not line up properly. I checked these pieces against my full-scale main deck print-out and turns out pieces 9 and 11 are simply mis-identified in the instructions.

COMPLETED:
• HMS Victory (DeAgostini Subscription) - if you haven't got it, get it...what a beautiful build. This was my first attempt at this stuff and what a great experience. The instructions were spot on for those new to the hobby.
• HMS Bounty Admiralty (DeAgostini Subscription) - View the build diary.

IN PROGRESS:
• USS Constitution (DeAgostini Subscription) - View the build diary.

IN NEED OF MY LOVE AND ATTENTION:
• HMS Sovereign of the Seas (DeAgostini Subscription) - promise myself I will get to this after I finish the USS Constitution and the HMS Bounty. Need to maintain balance in my marriage.

MONTHS 1 THROUGH 5

Before I move on I thought it would be good to do a quick review of months 1 through 5. I didn't start this build log until I was near the end of month 5 and thus I do not have any images to share. However, I will do my best in describing the experience and some of the steps I took to complete these first few months.

First off, months 1 through 5 are very repetitive and this will help as there will be no need to go into each month in super detail. For the most part, across these 5 months you will receive:

1. Pieces to assemble the dry dock
2. Pieces to assemble all the ribs
3. Pieces to assemble the keel
4. Few other odds and ends

The most important part for these first few months is to ensure you have an accurate print-out of the templates. THIS IS CRITICAL! If you do not you will struggle mightily later on in the build. And although the templates are not absolutely perfect, they are very close to accurate. In my experience over the first few months I found that the templates were off by about 1mm from the bottom of a rib to the top. In other words, just about perfect.

I found the same with the template for the keel section. Be very careful and accurate when you assemble the three pages to create a single template for the keel. In the end, from the very bow to the very stern, I found the template to be about 2.5mm off...not too shabby.

MONTHS 1 THROUGH 5

Rib Assemblies

The assembly for the ribs all follow the same process. Be sure to carefully separate them from the sprue using a sharp knife. I then did some very, very light clean-up of the edges. So light that I didn't even remove the char...mostly concerned with getting any burrs removed from where the piece attached to the sprue.

Next, I placed each piece on the associated rib template to ensure fit/size. Once satisfied, I assembled each rib starting with the keel section and building my way up to the top section. I would first do a piece on the port side, then a piece on the starboard, then port, then starboard, and on and on. This way I could continuously check that things were even as I worked my way up.

To glue the pieces I used my typical wood glue. I purposely left most the char on the edges of pieces to help accentuate the seams. However, I have seen others on this forum who have added a dab of India ink to their glue to help accentuate the seams a bit more - I am going to try this on a future build. In the end, it is all personal preference and up to you.

Once the rib is assembled, leave it to dry overnight. No matter how tempting, don't mess with it. Leave it be and let the glue dry thoroughly.

Repeat this process for all the ribs.
