The forward bulkhead, again, enhanced with scratch-built items to give a sense of the myriad of equipment. Both bulkheads took a combined 20 hours to complete.

Hi Phil,

Great work on the Bulkhead and with the scratch, I can clearly see where the 20 hours went well done.

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'.

Thanks for all the comments gents, much appreciated!BigGrin

So, this week saw more scratch-built pipes, gauges, valve levers and added handwheels.

Not many photos to show, but as with the bulkheads, plenty of time involved.

The attached photo shows the start of fitting out the complex arrangement of equipment.

That concludes this update. Seems a bit strange to show only 3 photos, when the amount of time involved, should see more. It would also be a bit tedious if i photographed every single step.Flapper

Until next time, thanks for looking in, have a great weekend and happy modelling!BigGrin

Hi Phil, once again a great post on this fantastic build, what I find is when you start on a section you keep thinking of bits to add, and if not careful you get stuck on it for longer than you thought, still no rush eh.

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'.

So more progress on the Control Room. The attached photo shows the other end of the hull section fitted out with, you guessed it, valves, levers and electrical junction boxes. This, in no way comes close to the myriad of equipment fitted, but by adding a few bits of my own i can show you a glimpse of the complexity.

The attached photo shows the conning tower hatch which connects the Control Room to the Bridge. All Bridge watchkeepers would either ascend or descend, via a ladder, through this hatch when going on, or coming off watch while on the surface.

The instructions said to paint the rim beige/ brown. I wondered about this colour choice and so checked out the photo of the real thing on the U995. Turns out it was a piece of leather fitted around the rim, which is a lot softer if scraped against whilst going up or down the ladder.

So instead of painting it to look like leather, fit the real thing!LOL So i ordered a sample of leatherette for £1, of which i only used a small piece and i'm very happy with the look.

This part of the hull is now complete, but not fitted yet as there is a lower hull section to concentrate on now, which is fitted with lots more equipment. When this is done, both hull sections will be fitted together to ensure the correct location of both.

The attached photos shows the forward end of this lower hull section. The main plastic sections are part-works supplied and everything else is scratch-built. I love a bit of scratch-building!Love

This view, looking down onto the map table, was meant to have the brass edges bent up. This would of looked a little cheap and so in keeping with U995, so i edged it with mahogany veneer strip; adding a bit or real wood makes it pop.

U230 was based in La Spezia, north-west Italy in 1943 and it is this version that my model based on. So i wanted to find a suitable map to place on the table and found a WWII maritime map of north-west Italy, 1943! Perfect.Love

Cropped the image in Paint 3D, resized in Powerpoint and printed out. Varnished both sides of the paper to protect it and viola, this is what you see in this photo!

That concludes this update. I'm currently very excited as me and the missus have next week off work and are going camping in Dorset, so no post next week! We haven't had a holiday in 2 years due to the Covid pandemic and are really looking forward to getting away and just chilling out. Nothing hectic.

So, see you in two weeks folks. Thanks for looking in and happy modelling!BigGrin

Hi Phil,

Again thanks for posting, a great update I am really enjoying this build and how you are presenting it, that Leatherwork is spot-on very well done. Hope you have a restful holiday camping in lovely Dorset and it sounds like we are in for good weather, don't forget the tent pegs and the teapot.

Regards

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'.

Had a fantastic week away and then cracked on with the modelling this week. I continued with fitting equipment in the Control Room.

The attached photo shows a metal cabinet, fitted with a small table and above it a compass for the Navigator to check the course.

The handles on the cabinet were made from 0.3mm diameter solder. The small table received the same treatment as the previous one; edged with mahogany. The compass itself was an image i processed, then glued it behind a piece of clear plastic before fixing it all behind the frame. I also added wires from the bottom of it and scratch-built the mahogany box sat on top of the table. The whole piece was then treated to a liberal pin wash of thinned matt black. I have to admit, close up photos shows the pin wash to be quite messy, but when viewed in 'real life', this piece is only 50mm in length and about 30mm tall and i think the pin wash really picks out the detail.

I then worked on an electrical junction box. This was part-works supplied and was just a piece of rectangular plastic and quite boring. So i went to work on it and all of the details you see are all scratch-built; basing it on the one fitted to U995. Looks more the part now.BigGrin
