Just amazing Phil. This build diary is always one of my most eagerly anticipated when it comes to seeing the latest updates on your model. You'd better hurry up and get it finished though, as I'm fast running out of superlatives to use in my comments without repeating myself!

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. More progress on fitting out the Control Room of my 1/48 scale build of Type VIIC U-boat U230. This week, or rather last weekend, was detail, detail and more detail. I concentrated on the housing for the attack periscope. I painted the 3 sections that make up the cylindrical shape and supplied with the part-works, then went to town adding pipes and valves. The attached photo how much detail i added, using 0.3mm, 0.7mm and 1.2mm diameter solder for the pipework and small, brass strips for valve handles. Attack periscope housing fitted along with the deck plate. This was all a very tight fit, even after liberal filing here and there and lots of fitting, removing and refitting. In the process i managed to knock off a couple of the small details on the periscope housing, which isn't surprising considering the tight space, but glued them back on after. Phew! I then decided to fit the lighting to the Control Room before i add the last details and the crew. When fitting the lighting in previous posts, it's always a bit hairy when i have to invert the model. Fortunately nothing fell off, including the crew, but this time i thought i would mitigate that little bit of stress and fit it now. Red lighting fitted and working!  For those that don't know and wonder why submarines have red lighting in the Control Room, i'll explain. When the OOW [Office Of the Watch] is looking through either periscope, the lighting inside the submarine must be slightly darker than what he can see through the eyepiece, other wise he can't see anything right? If you look out of your kitchen window for example, at night and your light is on, you can't see outside but only your reflection. Turn your light off and viola, you can see outside far better. Same principle with submarines. During the day, the Control Room will have normal white lighting on, no problem. Then when dusk arrives, or dawn, this lighting is switched to red lighting. During the night, red lighting is switched off completely and only the dials on the gauges are illuminated. Your eyes soon become accustomed and within 20mins you can still see everything. I have fitted red lighting as i imagine my model of U230 is leaving port to go on patrol at dusk.
