I seem to have a bit of a problem with the mainmast fighting top.
According to the mainmast plan the big square hole in the fighting top starts 14mm from the rear edge of the top. But on my top the hole starts 11mm from the rear edge. Which is correct?

I've laid my masttop over the plan and it's an exact fit apart from the hole in the middle. Help please.

And yes, I do know the big hole in the middle is the lubber's hole. I am trying to keep it simple.BigGrin

My lubber's hole starts 12.1mm from the rear edge of the top. I now find that the last of the six holes to be drilled will go through the forward crosstree member. Help please.

Mine does too.

If you look at the official build the hole falls slightly beyond the cross tree although it looks like it's been moved from the previous picture where the pencil marks were left.

Official Build

I don't think it matters but I am sure someone will be along in a minute to say if it does. Hole is easily moved if necessary I would guess.

If the holes are drilled as per the positions shown on the plan rather than with mast top laid over the plan, then all is fine.

So the measurements in the instructions should be ignored then?

And the large hole is in a different position on my piece.

The positioning of the six holes at either side of the mast top should be as per the measurements noted at steps 1 & 2 on page 12 of 61, which in theory avoids drilling into the cross tree parts placed at step 4 on page 11.

However, the 38mm measurement of the forward hole slightly encroaches into the forward crosstree by about 0.25mm, and therefore this mark should be moved slightly backwards by approx 0.5mm so that the hole is just aft of the crosstree, thus avoiding it; and the end result being as per the layout of the holes shown on the mast top plan, even though the inner box of the mast top on the plan differs in size to that of the actual part, (basically a drawing error).

Thanks for the response but it's not just the last hole that out though.

Just for those following up behind, the instructions and plan measurements are -

Instructions
6, 13, 20, 26, 32 & 38

Plans
5, 13, 18, 25, 31 & 36

So would it be better to re-drill the last hole and move it behind the cross-tree or does it not matter?

It may also be a good idea to update the Official Build instructions with this information as an erratum.

Just to repeat, if your last hole marked at 38mm encroach's into the crosstree area, then the hole should be moved slightly to avoid it.

All 12 of the 1.5mm mast top holes must be clear thru holes that do not encroach into the cross trees.

The drilling of the mast top is done at 61, where it can be seen that none of the 1.5mm holes encroach into the crosstree parts.

As you know, the image for the mast top plan which comes with 62, does not quite reflect that of the actual mast top base, and should only be used as a guide, simply because the mast top holes should have been drilled at issue 61 and that the mast top is completed in 61.
