The sternmost portion of the bulwark planking I was sure to extend beyond the stern post. Although I have trimmed the excess planking from the other areas of the bulwark planks, I decided to leave the excess at the stern in place for just a little while. I want to be sure things fit as they should, so I will wait until it is time to attach the top rail on the bulwark and stern. When dry-fitting that top rail I can check things and if all is well, trim these planks accordingly.

Now it is time to clean things up a bit. After reviewing the instructions it looks like the bulwarks do not get any interior planking. Since the backside of the exterior planking is visible it was necessary to go in and sand things. This was not the easiest thing to do since there are fairly small areas between each post and getting sandpaper into the nooks and corners takes a lot of patience and care. It took some time, but eventually I was able to sand the interior side of the planks until they look nice. I also cleaned up the edges of the gun-port openings. The images below show the end result, however, I did not yet clean up all the sawdust, so please excuse the mess.

I then planked the outer bulwarks on the port side. Simply followed the same process as the starboard side except the planking does not cover the entire bulwark section and instead leaves some bulwark posts exposed.

You need to be real careful when working around the gunport on this side since some of the planking is nothing more than a sliver of wood to the left or right of the opening. Just make sure you let the glue set completely and then take your time working the inside edge of the opening until everything is aligned beautifully.

I decided to use some different wood for the gunport framing to help it contrast just a bit with the bulwark planking. I only want to use this wood for a few accents here and there and I think the gunport are a good place - it's the same type of wood I used for the first strake on the Bounty's launch (re-attached that image here).

It doesn't show much when just sanded, but as you can see by the launch, once a poly finish is applied is has a nice subtle contrast with the kit supplied wood. I encourage everyone to save their scrap wood of all sizes, even the little bits, as they come in very handy on future projects.

Once I had the framing in place I went ahead and did some additional sanding to post the port and starboard bulwarks with a finer grit sandpaper both inside and out. Continued with this until I decided it was satisfactory and ready for wipe on poly. I won't apply the poly just yet, but was definitely easier to do as much sanding as possible before moving onto the next step and putting the top rail on.

I then assembled the bulwark top rails per the instructions and attached them to the bulwarks. Attached is a photo of the top rail in its rough state. I show this to demonstrate that I do go in and touch things up, smooth things over, get things looking just right once I have them on the ship. I then later go back and touch up with paint where needed. This process helps to really tighten up those gaps in these types of areas (the top rail will be very visible to the observer) and there is nothing wrong with going over it two or more times until you get it exactly as you want it.

I share that because several years back I thought I was completely messing things up. I would follow instruction, attach at instructed, paint as instructed, etc., yet I would end up with an unsatisfactory result. Once I figured out that the instruction don't tell you these little secrets was when I started to try various things and started to turn out models with better results. The techniques I use work for me, but there are definitely others, some of which may work better for you. Either way...try it and find what suits you.

To finish up the top rail I will apply a coat of 50/50 paint and water, maybe sand a bit more where needed, and then apply two or more additional coats of watered down paint until the rail looks nice and clean and doesn't look like a few pieces of wood from a laser cut template.

Note: once I am ready to start installing the transom planks I will trim back the stern end of the bulwark planks.

After a bit more light sanding I went ahead and touched up the bulwark top rail with my typical 50/50 mix of black paint and water. This will do for now and I will give it a good once-over when it comes time to put the poly on to ensure I have it exactly as I want it. In the meantime...on to the rails at midship.

The midship bulwark rails couldn't be any easier. I made the decision to paint mine black just like the top rail we just installed. I think the black offers a nice contrast with the wood. I primed the two rails with black primer and let them dry thoroughly prior to installing them on the ship.

I also went ahead and made the two smaller rail pieces, primed them black, and installed on the ship. The end result looks pretty good. Aside from painting these rails black I did not deviate from the instruction. Next up, planking the hull!

The wood supplied with this kit is fairly stiff and brittle, so it is not going to be very efficient to simply try and force planks around the curves of the hull. Past experience has taught me that taking the time to bend a plank with heat and a touch of water will make life much more enjoyable.

I followed my standard technique to bend the stern plank for this first strake. There is a fairly significant bend as the plank moves from the stern towards midship, so it took several passes with the iron, bending the plank a little bit more each time. After each pass I would test fit the plank to see how it lays with the hull. I really do try to get these as close to fitting as I possibly can before attempting to attach them to the hull. You can see in the first image below how this stern plank follows the hull curve very nicely. Once I was happy with the fit I went ahead and glued it in place. Don't get me wrong, the bend wasn't perfect and never is, but it was really close so when it came time to glue in place it was practically no effort to tweak it into place nice and tight against the bulwark.

There is a small plank that goes midship in this first strake. This piece required just a very slight bend. However, note that I bent the wood prior to cutting it to length. I do this because I find it virtually impossible to bend a plank towards the end of the piece. It can be done, but it is really difficult and can lead to a nasty burn on my finger. Instead, I keep life simple and bend the plank, check for fit, then cut it from the full length piece. Then glue into place.

Finally, the foremost plank for this strake. This was quite a bit more complex as the bend needed to not only follow the bulwark, but it also needed to bend around the bow. I first bent the plank to fit along the bulwark. Once I had that how I wanted it, I then bent the plank to wrap around the bow. Trying to do this in the opposite direction would have been much more difficult. Again, I got the piece to where I naturally rested into place very well before I proceeded to glue it into place.

Also, on this last plank I first trimmed/sanded the front edge that meets with the stem. I then carefully fit it into place and marked where it met the mid-ship plank. I actually cut it a bit larger than my mark and after dry-fitting it a couple more times, sanding the end at mid-ship, I finally had it fitting perfectly.

Lastly, because this strake is followed by a 2x2mm strake it is easier to sand this strake to perfection now. To try after installing the 2x2 strake would require some serious finessing as I would need to fit sandpaper between that strake and the bulwark. I think this will all make more sense once I get this next strake in place.

For the next strake of planking we needed to use 2x2mm. I basically followed the same process as I did for the first strake of hull planking except that we need to also paint these black.

First, pre-bent the planks. The one at the bow needs a serious bend and takes a couple passes with the iron before it is right. The plank at the stern needs just a slight bend. Then all get painted and left to dry. From there is was a simple matter of glueing pieces in place.

On the first strake I started the planking from the stern and ended up having to be very, very careful with my cut for the bow. I decided it would be much easier to start at the bow on all subsequent strakes. This way I have a bit more forgiveness when it comes to the length cut.

In the end, things look great and the ship is really starting to come alive.

The port side was nothing other than a repeat of what we just did on the starboard side. One slight difference, I did check very carefully for the alignment of the planks at the bow. Want to be sure that they line up well with the planking on the starboard side otherwise the ship will take on a look of being totally out of balance. Although not perfect, I am happy with how it turned out. Next up...hacking away at some ribs.

Time to cut some ribs. I will admit, this made me a bit nervous. With my penchant for errors it was obvious to me that should I make one hear it would be difficult to recover. So I took things super slow and steady.

First off, needed to cutaway a portion of the stern rib. There are some guides laser cut into this specific rib and it helped to guide the saw blade through. I used one of the saw blades that you can put on the end of a hobby knife handle. Makes it much easier to make some precision cuts in tight places.

The rough cut wasn't at the angle it needed to be - followed the waterline and not the angle of the hull planking. Looking at the instructions it was obvious, the angle needs to follow the same line as the planking. So for the sanding I went slowly and checked often to make sure the angle I sanded on the rib was the same as the angle along the planks - the attached image demonstrates this (green indicators) much better than my poor description.

Once I had completed the sanding I went ahead and glued in the top and bottom pieces for the opening. This entire process went per the instructions and there were not any surprises. Once all pieces were in place I did some quick cleanup with a fine-grit sandpaper. Then I repeated the entire process on the other side.

Just dropping a quick note here as there hasn’t been an update for a couple weeks. I am actually awaiting some additional lumber so I can tackle the hull planking. With the logistics issues presented by these Covid times it is taking longer than normal. However, the latest update from the supplier is that I should receive the planking by end of this week. Based on that, I expect to continue with my build updates by early next week. In the meantime, thank you for your patience and please PM me if you have any questions. Most importantly…have fun with your builds!

My, oh my! That took a lot longer than I imagined. Sorry for the delay in between posts everyone. I needed to get my hands on some additional wood for planking and it turned out to be much more difficult than I imagined. These Covid years are really putting a strain on shipping and logistics. Hopefully we will be through them soon. But as a result, what used to take a few days to get wood for planking now seems to take several weeks...almost two months.

But now here we are. I have the wood I need and can continue with the build. Starting right where we left off I went ahead and began with planking the starboard side of the hull. This is a really straight forward process as long as you remember to always, always, always pre-bend you planks to fit as best as possible before you try gluing them into place. I bent every single piece that went onto this side of the hull and the planks fell into place nicely.

The six strakes on the starboard side are complete but I do need to finish the port opening in the aft area and also sand it down quite a bit to get a nice clean finish. And obviously, the aft portions of the planks need trimming...that is next. Once I have that done I will plank the port side.

The port side planking is now down, but as with the starboard side I have not yet done the lower bulwarks. This was once again very straight forward. Just be sure to check symmetry from the bow and stern as you add strakes. It really stands out if you look at the ship from the bow and the strakes don't align from port to starboard.

Once I had the planking completed I went ahead and sanded first with an 80 grit (one of the few times I use sandpaper this rough on a build) to even out the planking and ensuring a smooth transition from top to bottom along the strakes. Then I followed up with 150 grit and slowly smoothed things out. Finally, I went at it with 220 grit to get a nice clean look.

Here is a view from the bow. I absolutely love the symmetry of a ship from this perspective. Don't know why I do, but I really enjoy seeing things line up like this. It's as though the world is in harmony :)

Still needs a bit of touch-up with the paint and definitely needs a good cleaning. But those two things aside I think it is coming along quite nicely.

COMPLETED:
• HMS Victory (DeAgostini Subscription) - if you haven't got it, get it...what a beautiful build. This was my first attempt at this stuff and what a great experience. The instructions were spot on for those new to the hobby.
• HMS Bounty Admiralty (DeAgostini Subscription) - View the build diary.

IN PROGRESS:
• USS Constitution (DeAgostini Subscription) - View the build diary.

IN NEED OF MY LOVE AND ATTENTION:
• HMS Sovereign of the Seas (DeAgostini Subscription) - promise myself I will get to this after I finish the USS Constitution and the HMS Bounty. Need to maintain balance in my marriage.
