Just wondering if there will be a Best Of The Best competition this year? I know the response was not exactly mind-blowing in 2020 but we were in a more restrictive period of lockdown. Having seen a slight increase in build diaries just lately, it might be worth a thought? Chris

Personally I would guess no. If I remember correctly, last years prize was funded by Mark himself. (Admin) The interest was incredibly minimal, bearing in mind the previous year had been a hefty lockdown too. It was a big 'ouch' for Mark.
I think 'once bitten' springs to mind but who knows?

Can someone clarify something for me that I have been curious about for a while now please? Does Mark actually work for DeAgostini i.e. is he an employee of the company?

""If I remember correctly, last years prize was funded by Mark himself.""
Very much appreciated gesture but I had no idea that Mark had funded it personally. In my naivity, I assumed that DA might have donated a kit. Too much to expect?

Hi All,
I am a sub-contracter for DeAgostini. It’s a bit of a grey area.
Regarding the Best of the Best competition, I’d love to see it go again, and am willing to give it a go. Last year, the prizes were indeed from my own “Stash,” simply because I felt that a competition was due. I feel the same this year, but I might scale back the prizes a bit. (It also allowed me to give a bit back to all of you. It is YOU guys that make these boards, not me. I simply try to keep the ship away from the icebergs. I’ve made a few mistakes along the way but I’m very happy with what the ModelSpace forums have become, even with all the frustrations we are having)
I’d love to see more engagement, as last year we had just 24!!!! entrants, which is pretty minimal, given that we have almost 5000 members.
I’m 100% open to ideas, so please post below any suggestions you might have on making this years “bigerer and betterer”
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark, Thanks for the explanation of where things stand. Over the past year, I have been following several diaries from varying areas of modelling. They have all been extremely interesting and skilful but I think I have made up my mind on which I personally consider to be classified as Best Of The Best for 2021. If this shows sufficient interest, I would love to put forward my nomination. On the other hand, if there is not enough interest, I totally understand that you don't want to pursue. Chris

I would love to see the 'Best of the Best' awards continue Mark, if only as an acknowledgement of the effort put in by those who post up build diaries. I hope that it does continue and that hopefully more people will get off their lazy derrieres and make the effort to vote? It only takes a few minutes to PM a vote!
I understand why a second prize was picked and awarded randomly from amongst those who voted last year, in order to try and get more members to do so, but obviously the response wasn't forthcoming, so that didn't really work in my opinion. Given that, I would prefer to see a second prize awarded not to a voter, but to a 'runner-up' from amongst those modellers who put up diaries and were included in the final list having been recipients of the monthly 'Build of the Month' awards throughout the year? That way those who put in an effort to support the forum and show their work, have a better chance of being rewarded for their time and effort over the course of the year?
All the best Mark.

Personally I wasn't a fan of the best of the best competition. I think that a competition that is only open to 12 people is not much of a competition. I would much rather see the return of the build of the year competition. This might encourage more build diaries and more voters , I for one would certainly have a go Man he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day will cease to be Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

Wouldn't you be voting for effectively the same thing no matter whether it's called "Best of The Best" or "Build of The Year"? Also, where does the figure of twelve come from? Were there only twelve nominations and twenty four voters?

We actually had 13 builds last year, and only 24 people voted. The winning voter received a $750 Model Factory Hiro kit from my stash. Mark

Chris we could only vote for the winners of build of the month in the BOTB where as in the BOTY all 5000 members could enter. Mark apologies there were 13 and the prize you donated was very generous and much appreciated ,it was just the format I wasn't keen on Man he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day will cease to be Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

With all due respect Chris the BOTB most definitely IS open to evveryone. The only requirement is that you post a build diary which then has a chance to be awarded Build of the Month status and for which you are then automatically entered into the BOTB competition?
I think it would ease confusion if this was referred to as an Annual Award, a bit like the Oscars or TV Awards, rather than a competition as such?

My apologies Kev, nightwisher and Mark. I was misunderstanding what you were referring to.
