Just a short post this time with the latest progress which takes me up to issue 92 i.e. β
of the way through and heading back to the UK.
The main task this trip was completing the bowsprit (more on that in a moment), placing the first carronade on the deck which I made about 50 years ago, and also fitting the ornaments to the galley.
Also completed the gallery, including breaking the badge, the ekeing rail and lots of unfinished touching up (including tipping over the paint pot on more than one occasion and needing to hold them down) with still more to do when I get back next year.

I went back to the real ship to get details of the gallery.

The bowsprit took longer than I was expecting in the end due to painting issues. I wound the 10 strips of thread, and they looked OK, but after I spray-painted them, the finish was awful see pics. So I took them all off and redid them, this time painting with brush thinking it was the spray process causing the problem but no, exactly the same.
I then remembered we did something similar on the main mast but when I checked, I had completed the windings with masking tape and simply painted over that and the finish was good. I have no idea what went wrong here and so if anyone knows, I would be curious to find out how this occurred. I doubled checked the video build, and it looks like thread was used there and painted over, and the finish looks fine.
Anyway, this gave me an opportunity to have a look at the pictures I took when I visited the Great Lady a few years ago, and I noticed that the bands are a lot thinner than on the model. I also checked a couple of books I have that provides plans, and they say the same thing. So, I broke out the mini masking tape and used that instead. All looks good again.

Finally, got round to fitting the Carronade I built over ten years ago. I put it away and was pleasantly surprised that it looked OK. Not sure why we're not building the other one yet, though.

Some trepidation painting the ekeing rail, but I bit the bullet and tried painting with the 1 mm masking tape. The results weren't too bad, so I will go with these now.

Had an accident with the badge, so carried on with the painting and glued it back together at the end.

Lots of touching up on the gallery sides to made it look as good as possible, and may paint the black bands again using masking tape.

All looking fabulous as per usual.
I feel your pain with painting the thread on the bowsprit.
I love the way the gallery has turned out and the eking rails look good too.

This looks absolutely amazing John well done! In terms of strange behaviour of bowsprit bindings when painted I found that one layer of shellac seals the thread and everything looks smooth then :) Every day you learn something new by look of it. I like the way your Victory looks now so I better get cracking with mine ;) All the best John! Regards Tom
