Hi

Could I please seek some advice as a total novice.

I am building Chatham Yacht in prep for my victory build. I ordered a couple of lengths of 8mm walnut dowel (1 mtr long) from a well known online supplier to replace the ramin mast wood stock.

The wood arrived today along with a 16mm beech dowel.

All 3 lengths are banana shaped, the walnut the worse of the lot.

As this is the first time I have ordered should I expect to see wood arrive in this state?

Thanks for any advice you can offer

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony…
This is just a personal view, but I would build the victory as this will give you more confidence and the materials are much better.

I also decided to sidetrack with building the Endeavour and the quality of materials are substandard to me…!
Which makes you feel, you are doing something wrong…!

You might consider carrying on with the Victory build and gain confidence with all the quality builders and there experience, also the master class weekly build with Tomick

Best regards,
Ian

If possible, it's better to choose your own stock via a local model shop or supplier, though the very nature of wood and the machining processes involved, means that on occasion it may not be as true as you might like; and depending on the severety of warp and thickness, trying to straighten it can be almost impossible.
