I then took a full length photo of the port side [left side] of the model, just to show how large it is, measuring 1.4 meters in length [4 feet 7 inches] and it weighs a fair bit too; pushing 5-7 Kg's i reckon! Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This week i concentrated on making the guard rails that run each side of the casing. I had to do a bit of research on this as the design of these guard rails changed quite a lot throughout WWII. I also referenced photos of U995 and U230 and found them the same, so based my design on that. I used 0.8mm O/D brass micro tube and brass connecting pieces. The guard rails have not been glued or painted, just fixed together. I still have a bit more 'pushing and pulling' to make sure everything looks right before i apply glue to every joint, then undercoat, weather and fit. This photo shows the smaller guard rails, located forward of the main sets. These will be connected to the aft guard rails via copper wire; like the real thing, these connecting wires could be removed when the U-boat was alongside and gangways were fitted from the casing to the jetty. Excellent work as always Phil, loving all of your weathering on the hull, it really looks as if it's spent many a day beneath the Atlantic hunting the merchant shipping in 'torpedo alley'! Very nice indeed.
As you're nearing the finish line now on this epic build Phil, have you given any thought as to what your next project might be, if any?
