kind words of encouragement, thx to all. currently working hard on the tender watching a coat of clear semi gloss dry clear water based paint dry. Very taxing. i add prior to putting a black wash over entire surface then wiping it off again. Hopefully leaving behind a nice black coal deposit in all the cracks. pics to follow later today.
Thx for following.

Here's the tender weathered and well used. I'll tune in the black dust a little, paint a bit thicker coat on the top surfaces where you would expect it to be and go over the vertical faces with an ear bud and clean water to brighten it up a bit. Other than that I will start assembly process of all the steam engine components, looking forward to that. Hope you like the pics. Thx for following along with my log.
To know fellow modellers are looking in is a very cool thing to be aware of and makes a build even more pleasurable................... and if they find something they would like to incorporate into there build, well that's very special.

This is coming along nicely. Have you given any thought as to how you will display the Rocket once completed? I used a length of G gauge track to display mine alongside another train I built (Rogers 119)

Hi Gil, thx for following along.
Regarding displaying the model, I do have plans. The track will be modelled from wood strips and I'll make a Perspex case to keep the dust off. Also I'll paint a backdrop, I did this type of display for a stage coach I made, the back drop is actually painted on the wall, much to my wife's bewilderment. I'll attach a pic.

Thx for the pic you attached, I have studied this pic many times as an aid to building my own, hope you don't mind? In fact, I just noticed how you nailed dwn the rings around the water bottle. I could not get good results with the aluminum strips at all due to the convex surface of the barrel. in truth, the barrel beat me at every turn, so I've settled for a sub par structure and I've currently got rubber bands representing the straps, not perfect but my best attempt yet.

PS. Any input from grandkids is always a valuable and treasurable addition, even the rascally ones, of which I have a couple!

Rainy day today so found time to do some modelling.

Gone back to an unfinished sub assmy, the stack. This appears to be working out ok. My process is/was as follows.

1 I made a temporary extension for the crown on top of the stack, this will protect the detailing until complete. It is secured in place by a very thin dowel that will just snap off when no longer required. (I hope).

2 Next was cutting out the aluminum form from the alum strip and wrapped it round the dwel that made the stack, ensuring it did not get super glued to the dowel.
Note, I left additional length on the aluminum crown for better attachment to the stack.

3 Finally dry fitted the crown to stack, a bit of whittling and it fits pretty good.

4 Final stage is on hold, that will be glueing the crown, removing the temp extension and blossoming the crown like a spring rose. That will be later in the build.

A few picks.

Wow, end of 3rd week of build, might I say a very enjoyable build it has been so far.
Just a bit of background to provide excuses for some of my not so perfect modelling skills and a few short cuts when it comes to detailing. My close up eye sight is not what it used to be nor is my dexterity, (or my spelling come to think of it)! However there are advantages to the close up eyesight issue, to me everything looks good.

Example 1 Suspension support brackets, I tried bending and drilling to get the U brackets sized correctly, no good, in the end I just cut some wood blocks to fill the gap, looks ok, not ideal but not frustrating to do either. Attached a pic.

Still, my weekly status pic shows a bit got got done. Hope you like it.

Blighty.

Thx Malc, I've put some hours in but bird migration will take a front seat for next couple of weeks, bird watching is a big hobby of mine.
