Dragged from my pile - an old already started Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 72. The previous owner had (for no logical reason) assembled the main body/nose/rear wing parts. Goodness knows why. Anyway, it will all come apart again and this time I'm going to have a go at a lesser-known '72. Team Lucky Strike, driven by D. Charlton. Anyway - off we go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Well, now I know why the kit was only part started... There are two sprues of parts missing and one of them contains lots of suspension bits as well as other assorted gubbins. However, never one to give up, I'm going to try to scratch make the required bits, at least so as to be able to complete it somehow. The body parts have been dismantled, cleaned up, reassembled and now painted. On we go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Great start Roy. I’m sure with your talents you will make the missing parts. Watching with great interest. Andy.

That's a lovely paint finish there Roy! I would think with the number of Lotus 72's you're working through it might be worth getting a full kit and making some big silicone moulds of the sprues with the fiddly bits on so you can always cast replacement parts if they are missing from the NEXT one! Will be watching your solutions with great interest! Robin. Many thanks for looking in and commenting chaps. I've built up most of the front cage but there were a good few missing parts: Suspension drop links for the the upper arms to torsion bars, anti-roll bar and worst of all, the front hub uprights. The links and roll bar were made fairly easily from different thickness brass rod. The uprights were cobbled together using bits of tube, and thick copper wire. Not particularly accurate but they will be hidden inside the front wheels so can't really be seen. Brake shafts are also missing but I'll make those from plastic rod or even sprue. roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Nice work as always Roy and impressive in the way that you've overcome the problem of the missing parts. A lot of people would have just abandoned the project to the 'shelf of doom'!
Nice also to see a '72 in a different livery to the normal 'JPS' scheme too. The 'Lucky Strike' scheme is one of the more attractive ones in my opinion and well done you for attempting it. There was also a Tyrrell 003 in the 'Lucky Strike' livery back in the '70s and I think you can still get the Tamiya 1:12 Tyrrell 003?
Looking forward to seeing more progress on this one Roy!

Many thanks Kev. I've assembled the main engine parts and now the transmission. I contemplated using thinner plug leads but TBH, this model is going to have so many scratch/bodge parts, I just went with the supplied kit tubing. I've now created and printed the decals. A bit of cheatery-pokery here, as I found a very blurry image on Google of a set of decals, so I imported it into Page Plus and 'drew' new art over the top before finally deleting the imported copy. After that I sized it to scale and printed. The three blackish rectangular decals are actually for my big low drag E Type. Next will be to somehow cobble together all the missing rear suspension arms, links, parts etc... No idea as yet where to start as I don't have any measurements to go by, other than to open up one of my remaining 1/8 Entex kits, measure the parts and re-scale them to 1/12 to get the sizes. roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Many thanks Trev. I've just about sorted the front end now. The steering is fixed out of neccessity due to the number of 'fake' parts I've had to cobble together. Main engine and transmission assembled althought there will be more wiring and plumbing added later. The next task is to invent the missing rear suspension rods, arms, supports etc etc. To get the sizes (almost) correct I'm using one of my remaining 1/8 Entex kits for reference. I'm measuring the bigger Entex parts and then re-scaling them to 1/12 so that when I make my own parts they shoud be the correct size. Here's hoping... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

I measured the relevant suspension parts in the big 1/8 Entex kit, then calculated them in 1/12. Using a steering arm from the 1/12 kit I made umpteed impressions in plasticine and cast a load of link ends in resin. Once cleaned up and the ends drilled, I made the rod from thick copper wire. Once glued together and painted, they don't look too shabby. All the rear suspension will be rigid as the small resin pieces aren't strong enough to support working springs etc. More to invent... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Yeah! Resin Rules!! Lovely job on those pieces Roy, this is turning into another great build - are you starting up your own miniature Lotus museum? Well Done again! Robin. Many thanks for looking in and commenting chaps. Ok - the engine and transmission are now attached so it was down to making all the missing bits that hold the rear wheels on - everything apart from the hub uprights. I've used brass tube and copper wire to produce a set of parts that aren't totally accurate, but will serve to give the look of the '72 rear suspension. Still a few parts to make and fit and then it will be the home straight to finish. roymattblack attached the following image(s):
